Word Definitions

Apologies if there is already a thread for this, but I did not see it.

As much of an anglophile as I thought I was prior to moving here, I cannot believe how many words I do not understand there are; let ALONE the cockney rhyme...

So, for starters, will someone please tell me clearly what a 'blog' is?  And is it a derogatory term?

The only blog I know is the online diary thingie.   ???

Are you sure they didn't say bog?  As in toilet?

And then there's blag...which is to get something in a sneaky way.

I think 'blag' may be from underworld/crime slang, either from 'blackguard' (=scoundrel), or possibly 'blague' (= humbug, claptrap, from the French word)

The following is quite an attractive on-line dictionary of UK slang:

Now promise us that you're going to learn a page a week, dear Elizabeth, and that each of your posts from now on contains at least one slangy expression in it!

isn't blog just contracted from 'web log'? so online diary or any online regular posting?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yep - a blog is simply short for weblog and is in no way a country specific term. I have a blog myself and at no time am I English....

I recently spent a day really going wild cleaning the house, and putting little decorative touches here and there,, candles, throw pillows,, etc. Really tarting up the place.

My husband nearly found himself with one of my dear throw pillows in his ear when he showed up and made the comment after all my hard work,,,,,
" humm, it looks really homely in here"

WHACK!

We had a long talk about word definations and how different they are on the other side of the pond LOL.

Yes!  My DH once commented on me giving off a "homely" vibe.  I was infuriated...until he explained.  Still niggles at me when I hear a house described as "homely", though!   :)

Perhaps you should have offered him a "fag"?   ;)  Or threatened to buy him "suspenders"?  ;)

Have to admit having had the "homely" conversation as well!  ;)

Elizabeth, you should be able to find any number of Cockney Rhyming Slang books at any local bookstore.  Phil sent me one long before the move (he's originally a true East End Boy!) and it's really quite interesting!

Well, I'm sorry this one is simply not open to debate. Any dictionary will tell you homely means plain and ordinary whilst homey mean homelike and comfortable.

I have to say that Mr Big is right, much to my surprise.

My Pocket Oxford Dictionary (4th ed, 1942) defines 'homely' as :''plain, unpretending, not beautiful": and 'homey' as '"suggestive of home".

Now see I found the homely thing weird too.  But after visiting here and realizing that its not just Chris that says that I haven't had that conversation with him.  So I'll ask now after explaining it to your hubby's have they changed how they say that word.  I'm sure it doesn't come up often.  Just curious.
