Weird Bicep Pain
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:22:39 AM »
Around 2 weeks ago, I strained my right shoulder at the gym. Since then I have stayed away from weights and using my arms in general at the gym.
Now the pain has left my shoulder and has moved to my bicep, and now my left bicep hurts as well. The pain is worst first thing in the morning and tends to get better in the course of the day. I have been taking an ibuprofen in the morning to ease the pain.
I am baffled as to what the problem may be. I have not done any heavy lifting or any other activity that would aggrevate it. The only thing I can think of is I was sleeping on my right arm every night but now that both arms hurt, I am at a loss.
I should really go and get an xray but dont want to waste the hospital's time, if that makes any sense, and I fear I will be fobbed off.
Any advice would be appreciated..

Is your arm still in pain? How's your flexabilty and mobility? Is your back sore? You may have pinched some nerves.   Can't hurt to go to your GP and explain your symptoms and see what they think.

A few questions:

1. Do you normally do a lot of bicep/arm work at the gym?

2. Is there any surface tenderness, warmth, or redness?

3. How much does it limit your daily activities?

Chances are, a GP will only tell you to more of the same. It might well be a problem of disuse at this point. An X-ray probably won't show anything wrong, especially if it's a muscle pain (and it's unlikely a GP would even order any radiography for something like this).

Thanks guys...the pain is a lot better now but I still wake up with slight numbness in my biceps.
I had not been doing any excessive activity and had no other swelling or anything. The only thing I found extremely painful was putting on and taking off a top, which is still a little tough.
If the numbness does not go away...I dont know what to think, except I am getting old  ???

I'd still wager that it's a case of disuse. When your body gets used to doing certain physical activities (ie, weights at the gym) and then you suddenly stop, you're going to feel a bit stiff and sore.

This would explain why the morning is worse -- you go for 8 hours without using your arms, then expect them to work again. As the day goes on, you've been using those muscles doing normal, non-exercise stuff, and it loosens things back up.

If the initial injury has gotten better, it might help to go back to your old gym routine (or maybe slowly working back to that) to recondition your biceps.

If ibuprofin and/or paracetamol help, take them.

Thanks. Yep, I was taking 1-2 Advil every morning when the pain was really bad, just to get me through the morning.
I think what was aggrevating it was that my gym changed all their weight equipment to these contraptions with pulleys and things and I think it caused extra strain. I am going to stick to free weights from now on..
No numbness today so things are looking up  ;)
