What to take? What do you miss most?
« on: June 02, 2004, 04:30:42 PM »
Okay... I am trying to make a list of sorts of foods that are harder or impossible to come by in the UK.  These of course have to be suitcase/shippable items.  ;D

I have 4 boxes of Graham crackers.
I have Pumpkin.
I have basic Mexican chili powders.
I have Ranch and Onion Soup mix for dressing.

So what else should I bring?

Balmerhon is finding it hard to source sour cherries here (and I am afraid I wasn't the help I thought I was being), dear VNP, so if you're looking to bake cherry pie, it might be an idea to bring a can or two?

Good idea on the vanilla...I love the bourbon based one I get..

Do they not do corn syrup?  How does one make a pecan pie?  The horror!

if only cool whip were packable.  *sigh*

I had a huge list of things but i'm really going to try and embrace the change......but will be throwing in boxes of brownie mix and sugar free jello.  :)  If only baked lays and soy crisps were nonperishable.

Yes - Ranch dressing is a good one. I missed Wrigley's Extra (polor Ice) gum AND sunflower seeds! Everytime someone came to visit they would bring me LOADS!

Errr... I still have no luck finding maple syrup here.. So I'd bring that, and pancake mix since that's also proving difficult to get.  Chili cheese Fritos (because I love them soooooo much).

You can get pancake mix here. You can even get Bisquick, it's just usually sold around Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) so I stock up (but seriously, it's so easy to make yourself!!!).

You can also get maple syrup here. I think you can get a sugar free jelly (jell-o) though not sure how it compares to US version.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

The only large store here I can shop at (because of distance and lack of transportation) is Safeway... and the one here carries neither maple syrup nor pancake mix larger than like, a packet that would barely make 2 pancakes.  You're right about the pancake mix though.. it's easy enough to make yourself.  It's just not much worth bothering with if you haven't got the syrup.  :-\\\\

Maybe when I'm craving it enough, I'll break down and buy the 100% Canadian maple syrup 2 oz. bottle for £5  :o

NOOOOOOooooooooooo!!!!!   :o

Buy the Lyle's Maple Flavoured Syrup!  It's absolutely gorgeous (very much like American syrup) and only 99p for a bottle!  It is lovely and THICK... not like that horrible 100% stuff!

I would buy it if I had the option at the store.. unfortunately not though.  ( I don't like pure maple syrup so I agree with you on that one)
