What is American honeydew melon called in UK?
« on: December 04, 2008, 02:57:26 PM »
What is called a Honeydew in the UK is known in America as a Casaba.  I'm looking for the greenish-white melon known as a Honeydew in the US.  While I love Casabas, I am dying for an American Honeydew.  Is it to be found here?  Possibly under another name?

I don't think I came across it. Galia melons are pale and greenish and sort of close. But it's a bad time of year to buy them now anyway - they're summer fruits!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm not sure, but we totally need a sticky with all the things that are called different names in the UK.

I'm confused by your post.  Casaba and honeydew are different things here.  I've found honeydew melon in the UK, just not as frequently as I did in the states.  It was definitely called honeydew though.

Here in Doncaster, I have only seen Casaba or Canary melons (yellow, ridged on the outside) labeled as "honeydew."  My husband can't recall ever seeing a melon like the below.

What I am looking for is this, greenish-white, smooth melon:

I'm sure that melon you posted a picture of is the kind that my mother bought for us in London regularly when I was growing up -- I think back then it was the only one you could get here. I recall we did call it a honeydew.

Is the one you say you can't find? I'm almost certain this type should be around.

I have definitely bought these in Sainsbury's, in London, under the name 'honeydew melon'.

I just found this picture online, so maybe there is some disagreement about what exactly honeydew is:

Hmm, now I'm confused because that too looks like the kind my mother had in our house.

The picture that Schiann posted is what I think of as honeydew - or did in the US anyway.  Here, I'm not sure what's what melon-wise, so I just go with the flow & try it all.  (I'm not much bothered to be honest - lol!)

I can't believe I just googled 'melons'.

Time to go home I think.

This has been a strange day for discussion on here!
