Hanukkah/Christmas...what are you making?
« on: December 04, 2008, 09:20:30 PM »
I thought it would be fun to post what you're planning for your holiday dinner, so I (and others) can get new ideas! :)

I found a new dessert today that I'm going to try - Pear Fritters

I have a full house this holiday season with my parents and my inlaws. I am going to do Roast Beef and Turkey on Christmas day (its my dads birthday, and as you know, my family are all Jewish) and some plain dishes for my inlaws who hate anything with taste or flavour other than salt, and some more ornate ones for my parents, who love garlic.

Haven't got everything planned yet, but I will definitely cook my turkey outside on the BBQ

I'm not cooking - my MIL is!  ;D  It'll be the traditional fare:  turkey, roast potatoes, stuffing, usually a little sausage or two somehow related to the stuffing (and there might be some bacon in there), brussel sprouts, other veg, probably Yorkshire pudding, gravy, etc.  Christmas pudding.  Lots of wine & other alcohol!  Roll on Christmas!

I'm sure it will be the same old Turkey Christmas lunch we have had for the past five years :(  I'm hoping there is a lot of gravy to mask the over-doneness as usual! :-\\\\

I might make something (Or rather have Rich make it) to bring along.

As long as my mom makes her scalloped potatoes, I don't care what else is on the plate! Drool.

Our Christmas is like this:
Then the Who's, young and old, would sit down to a feast.
And they'd feast! And they'd feast! And they'd FEAST!
FEAST! FEAST! FEAST!
They would feast on Who-pudding, and rare Who-roast beast.
Which was something the Grinch couldn't stand in the least!
And THEN They'd do something He liked least of all!
Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
Would stand close together, with Christmas bells ringing.
They'd stand hand-in-hand. And the Whos would start singing!
They'd sing! And they'd sing! And they'd SING!
SING! SING! SING!

 ;D

LMAO!!!   [smiley=laugh4.gif] Glad you get to go home to be with the other Whos!

I have no idea what is for dinner, as DH is in charge of it this year.  I made Thanksgiving dinner for him for the first time (and we usually just had the same for Christmas dinner in my family, except once in a while when they would make a Mexican feast for Christmas just to change it up), so now he gets his turn to show me how its done in England!  I'm excited to wear the funny paper hat!   [smiley=crown.gif]

YEA!!!!  DH and his family always laugh at me for being so excited about the hat.... glad you guys look forward to it, too!  I think it's because I always see it in the movies and now I am here and I get to wear one...  ;D

Our usual is roast beef and yorkshire pudding with all the assorted veg. Usually we try a couple new things at Christmas to accompany the beef, whereas with Thanksgiving we keep it very traditional.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm excited for my family's prime rib!!!

My dad makes the best crispy roasted potatoes! It was nice to experience DB's family's Christmas last year, but I wasn't a big fan of the food at all (plus we had three Thanksgivings last year, plus a turkey on Christmas, I was all turkeyed out). I was asked to make a Boston Creme Pie for dessert this year. DB's mum sent over some Christmas cake and pudding for him since it's his first Christmas without his family. She also sent over some Christmas crackers.

We will be at my MIL's but I think DH is cooking...I may make pralines but I have a feeling I would be the only one to eat them-they don't like things too sweet (blows my mind as pralines are AMAZING!).

Other than that, the usual fare...veggie roast for us, turkey breast for MIL and her partner, veg, bread, wine...lots and lots of wine :)

i'm spending Christmas Day with my estranged husband (long story), so not looking forward to it at all.
I think im going to roast a chicken he and i both hate turkey), and do brussels sprouts sliced up and sauteed in butter with bacon & onion, maybe a couple of chipolatas and some sort of potato.  And stay totally sober so i can GTF out of there as soon as dinner's over.

This is my first Christmas away from my family as I will be spending it in Ireland with my fiance's family.  :-\\\\  Not sure what we'll have, but I'm sure it will involve a few types of potatoes. I'm making chocolate chip cookies with green and red M&Ms. It's not Christmas without them!  ;D
