Hopefully hypothetically speaking!!!

It's not that clear cut.

The guidance says that you must leave or make a new application "as soon as practically possible".

If the employers send the work permit back to the HO, the HO will write asking for your paspsort and will curtail your leave.  Otherwise, I use as a rule of thumb three months to get a new application lodged or leave.

Haven't we had this question come up before, though?  Where did the 28 days guideline come from originally (since I didn't make it up out of thin air, hehe!)

It woudl be 28 days from the date of curtailment of the visa, 28 days from the end of any visa or 28 days from the date of refusal of a visa application.  As a work permit isn't a visa, the rules are a we bit different.

springhaze, you're correct.  But Phat gets the consultation period and curtailment cannot even start until that's finished with.

Phat, what line of work are you in?

Thank you guys, I thought I remembered the 28 days and then I was confused about the consultation period adding in there

Once, in the long distant past, I got made redundant whilst on a work permit.  With a wife and two children too.  There's nothing quite like it in terms of getting your full attention.   ;)

I'll say, and that's a far worse off situation than I am in- at least its only me and not a family to worry about!

Speaking of this situation, I think I may looking to switch into a Tier 1 visa...

As serious as something can be for 3 months!   ;)It is pretty serious though, but immigration or not, I'm not getting hitched after only 3 months  :P

Let me know how things turn out.  My company will be looking for Engineers come the New Year and I know a fantastic recruiter that specializes in Pharma and Medical Devices.  It would mean moving further south; but, you could stay. :)
