They are fantastic!  Yes, the heat is uneven, but this is what is so good...rather than having temperature settings, different parts of the oven heat to different temperatures, so keeping something on the bottom will be good for just warming, and having something on the top would be for faster, hotter cooking.  They are great for hanging clothes up over (no damp clothes hanging on a clothes horse for years) and they warm up the kitchen without any electricity bills.

If I could get one in my rented flat I would!

(Sorry for the hijack).

I can't share all your gripes, but oh got the lack of heat...it's going to be the end of me!!  We live in a tenement flat from the 1840s.  Love the high ceilings, HATE the draftiness of it.  And to think that winter hasn't even started!  Good luck making it through. :)

Sorry you are freezing your tail off!!!  Our place has a heating system that is about 20 years old, but it works to some extent, and no double-glazing or anything.  It isn't as bad as your situation (we don't refer to the upstairs as Greenland, but it's getting pretty close, and I suspect it will get a lot worse in the months to come).  We bought a small electric heater from Argos for £10 and it really helps take the chill out our room at night, and once we are under the ginourmous quilt, it actually feels pretty toasty!  Maybe you could try that....

I live in a draughty old tenement flat and have no heating in my bedroom either.. i do, however, have an electric blanket, which is brilliantly warm and cosy, so i've no complaints.

Just another thing you could maybe try?

Hot water bottles are comforting too.
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing
