What cute things do you do or did do to endure the distance?
« on: January 05, 2009, 02:06:35 AM »
So perhaps this has been discussed before but I didn't see anything on it.  I thought it would be a nice idea to share with each other the cute things you currently do (if you are in a LDR) or once did to help endure the distance.  I know some people watch movies via skype and I remember reading that one person's partner always wrote her poems in the morning but I know with this group, there is probably so many more ideas then I have ever thought of.

One thing my partner and I always do, every night we pick a location for us to meet in our dreams.  We have been ballroom dancing, ice skating in the mountains in Canada, beach walking in Portugal, skiing in Switzerland and back again.

what do you all do?

Cheers!

Hm.  I always thought DH and I were really cute, but looking at your examples, I'm less sure of our cuteness!  We just emailed every day and videochatted for about an hour every night.  Then there would be text messages before/during/after key events...not that cute, I suppose.  I didn't really care for the distance bit of our relationship and I was very anxious to put all the separation behind us - we both were (and thankfully we have now).

Finding time to chat every night is tough for us, so if you two pulled it off, I think it's cute.  ;)

We used to play card games together on Pogo while we were on webcam (yes, if you are playing spades, conferring with your partner is technically cheating, but it was fun!), we would send each other links to music videos that reminded us of the other person while on webcam or through email when we were missing each other (we sent at least one or two emails a day, sometimes up to 4 or 5!!!).  We both had iPods and we put the same playlist of "our songs" on our iPods so we could listen to the same tunes.  Loads of sweet text messages when one of us had to work and couldn't be on webcam with the other person.  (We spent 12 hours on webcam in a single session, with most sessions going up to 5 or 6 hours!  :o  And of course, we would rush home to get even just 15 minutes together on a lunch break!)  We had "date nights" on webcam where we would eat dinner at the same time and have some wine or a few pints together.  We sent romantic cards with handwritten messages.  DH sent me huge bouquets of flowers for odd occasions like Thanksgiving. It was great, but full of tears.  I missed him more than I ever knew I could miss anyone, I cried every time I had to hang up on his gorgeous face on my monitor.  My friends pretty much had to drag me out of the house to get me off the computer to stop me from emailing him or spending all weekend on the webcam.  It was nuts!!!!   [smiley=mad.gif]  But as exciting and romantic and bittersweet as it all was, I would rather sit next to him on the sofa watching telly every day for the rest of my life than ever go back to that!   :P

omg I love this thread already!   We dont really do a lot of "cute" things, as he isnt the cutesy type, but I do send handwritten letters every so often and he LOVES recieving them. I always get the best phone calls afterwards "I just read your letter..." and it almost ALMOST sounds like he may have a little cry :)

He hates the webcam unfortunately, but I'm trying to convince him...er maybe more like force him... into thinking that its a good thing.

I've tried the dream thing and he claims he "doesnt remember his dreams". Hmph. So what, meet me there anyway!  :P

We also send "love boxes" which are like little care packages to eachother every few months. Usually they are full of the food that we cant get in the other's country, but there is always a little something special in there, and I am in sappy heaven when I get a love box!

I also have a super cute Valentines day idea... I'll give an update on that if it works out :)

We didn't have webcam, but there were loads of emails (he'd take pictures of random stuff, like the cat in the neighborhood I loved, him working on some new project, etc.), tons of texts, a few phone calls where he'd Skype my landline phone at work early early before the shop opened.  We'd also write each other a few letters and he'd include CD mixes in his--usually songs that were about us in some way.

We'd write letters, as well as emails, send care packages with more notes in, and compilation tapes (yes, this was in the days of cassettes...).  Also did some chatting via primitive webcams.  But mostly just spent hours on the phone.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I know that this probably doesn't sound cute to many people, but when DH and I were still in the LDR I was working nights from 9 to 6. I would call him on my break every night around midnight to wake him up and talk while he got ready for work and he would call me every day when he got home from work to talk to me as I fell asleep around 11 a.m. US time.

It made us feel much closer to hear the other wake up or fall asleep.

We talk sometimes about how much we miss those calls. We always felt closer and could talk for hours. Now, if he has to go alone to his Mum's on a weekend he or I will call the other about 11 pm and we fall asleep talking to each other, just like the good old days.  :)

After a year, when I was bored of chatting, playing games or watching movies/TV online (surfthechannel.com is a godsend!), I found this site:

We've tried some of the activites, and it's fun!

Thanks for sharing that link!

This is an awesome idea from that website: "I wish I had this or that Frank had this...  I found this website: Estarling.com.  They sell WiFi photo frames that you can email pictures to.  You control the frame from miles away!  You can make playlists and set the time and day you want the pictures to display on the frame.  How neat is that?"

I want one!

We liked sending youtube music vids to eachother - there are some good suggestions here.  Hubby started it originally - Very cute  [smiley=smitten.gif]

We did most of the above, emailing, cam, chats, ecards, and sending each other songs.  Another thing I would do was after him visiting, I would slip a card/letter in his carry-on bag for him to find on the plane, and then put a card in the mail the day he would leave to come to the US so he would have something from me as soon as he got back to Dublin.

June 2004 he sent me two snowmen Christmas ornaments; one had my name and one had his.  I thought it was quite a bizarre thing to send someone in the middle of summer.  I called him and asked him about it, and he said it was to let me know that whether it was me in Ireland, or him in the US, his goal was for us to be permanently together by Christmas and that we could hang up the ornaments together.  I was in Ireland two months later.

Oh Yes!

The day I was going home after my visit to the states..I got some post it notes and wrote little messages and jokes on them and dotted them around his house...mainly places that he woud not neccesarily find straight away..for eg..on the page for the next month on his wall callender...inside the door of the microwave...in the sugar bowl...inside his wallet...Inside a dvd case...inside his cereal...medicine cabinet...and so on and so on....
