Watching the inauguration
« on: January 05, 2009, 08:08:17 PM »
Does anyone know if the inauguration ceremonies will be broadcast in the UK at all?  I'm finally excited about a new president for the first time in my life, and I'm really hoping I won't have to resort to the internet to hear his speech!
On s'envolera du même quai
Les yeux dans les mêmes reflets,
Pour cette vie et celle d'après
Tu seras mon unique projet.

Je t'aimais, je t'aime, et je t'aimerai.

I can't imagine something like that won't be covered on BBC. If it's not, however, I watched all the election coverage on msnbc online so while not ideal, you'll get to at least see/hear it. :)

Exciting times, eh? I can't wait myself!

Really! This is going to feel like watching Di and Charles wedding, beamed around the world. But this time, I won't have to hold a slumber party and stay up all night.

BBC, Sky News, CNN, Fox News - I think there'll be a few channels to choose from, although judging by their coverage on the day after the election, Fox's coverage may resemble a State Funeral -  maybe they'll decide to show a rerun of Bush's last inauguration instead!

If you don't feel like sitting home watching it on television, and if you're in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Oxford or Edinburgh, there are Inaugural Balls being held by Democrats Abroad.

I'm not near enough to any of them, or I'd love to!

I have, however, been invited to an Inauguration Day party by a new American friend who lives locally!  ;D

You're so lucky, chary. When I lived in Cornwall I didn't know any Americans who lived locally. :(

I may go to the one in Birmingham...not sure yet.  Not all that interested, but always look for an opportunity to get together with some friends...

Where were you in Cornwall? I feel as if I hear American voices all the time here! There's even an American man who works stacking the shelves at Morrison's! When I was in Pembrokeshire, I don't think I heard more than two or three American voices in the five years I lived there, counting tourists.

I'm sure it will be on the Beeb if nothing else.

I wanted to actually GO to the real thing (I live in Maryland now) but the potential transportation issues and sheer volume of people have changed my mind. Maybe I'll have an Inauguration party instead!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Newquay. Whereabouts are you?

Sort of midway between Penzance and Hayle - but soon (hopefully) to be moving nearer St. Ives.

What time is the inauguration?  Oxford isn't that far down the road but I suspect it will be an evening thing which rules out this father with a 2 yo! :(
Mind you it's on a Tuesday so I'll be working in London anyway.

Sounds like some fun partying will be going on!

I believe the swearing-in ceremony is at 11:30 am Eastern time / 4:30 pm UK time. Oh, I'll definitely be watching it with celebratory cocktail in hand  ;D
