Sounds interesting.  I, for one, think it would be the first of many steps in the correct direction for healthcare in America.  Of course, it will have its detractors, but they will probably be the same people who are against an American NHS.

You'd be wrong to assume that. My views on digitizing records are separate from my views on socialized healthcare. I am simply weary of entities entrusted with this information to protect it properly. Having your medical records for sale on a black market seems to be worse that having your identity stolen. And I certainly don't want this to happen until the notification laws have been updated from half-assed "whenever we get around to it!" to "right when the theft has been detected."
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I can only say that within Kaiser, my HMO, things are awesome since our records went digitized. I can access my test results online, i can go to any center and all the docs can see my whole records, not to mention at the hospital. Now, this is one company and not the whole US. But, having your, say dermatologist/OB/etc, be able to see your whole medical history is pretty awesome and, hopefully, provides a more informed and useful application of their medical knowledge :)

I hope we don't screw it up if it does go nationwide!
