Semi sweet chocolate chips
« on: January 15, 2009, 06:26:40 PM »
Does anyone know what would be an equivalent for these?

Thanks!

I never found them to be chocolatey enough for me! I usually use Green & Black 72% cooking chocolate. As far as I know, Nestle's semi-sweet morsels are only around 40% or so ... though Nestle won't commit to a number. I like my chocolate with a bit more oomph than that!  :)

I'd guess that plain chocolate chips (as opposed to milk chocolate ones) are as close as you're going to get. That's what I use, anyway.
If we called them Sad Meals, no one would buy them.

If you have a Costco membership they have large tubs of Belgian choc chips in the baking section and I have found they are the every bit as good if not better than Nestle's

I'm sure this has been asked before, but how does one obtain a costco membership?
I could do with big tubs of some baking stuff like choc chips (especially if they're belgian :D)
:)

Basically to be eligible for Costco Membership you either need to work in the public sector (ie. teacher, NHS, civil servant, banking etc.) for Individual Membership or own / run your own business for Trade Membership.  You can contact any Costco to see if you're eligible for membership.

Yep, that's what I just used to bake my chocolate chip cookies.  I think it was Dr. Oetker brand or something like that.  Pretty close to what I used to use back in the US which was  a supermarket version of Nestles semi-sweet choc chips.

Yeah, I use Dr. Oetker (sp?) too! I just wish they came in the big bags like Toll House--I like to snack on them, but there's never any spare!

It doesn't have to be your own business but you would have to get the managing director at the company you work for to apply for a card for the business.  You could arrange with him/her that you will actually pay the fees.  Trade memberships get several cards.  Best thing to do is visit Costco yourself and ask or find someone in your area who has a Costco card and go along with them.

I thought those chocolate chips in Costco were rank.  To me, they tasted really waxy.  There's just no substitute for Nestle's morsels, IME.  :\\\'(

Nestle's morsels always tasted waxy to me, to be honest. Even in the US, I always bought bars of good quality baking chocolate and then hacked that to bits to use.

I've used these: http://www.sainsburys.com/groceries/frameset/navigation_frame.jsp  They are pretty good.  I know someone else on the forum suggested them awhile ago.

There is another way, which is what I did.  Apply for one in the US.  Anyone can get them there.  If your BF is still there he can get it.

I'm too fecking lazy to do that.  I just get Nestle's brought over when people visit.

The link doesn't work.   ;)  What name / brand is it?
