Looking for cottages in the Lake District?
« on: January 16, 2009, 03:56:41 AM »
During my next visit my partner and I want to head up to the lake district for a long weekend (3 nights).  We may have 2-3 people join us and so we are looking for a cottage that can house 4-5 people somewhere, right now anywhere in the lake district, we are pretty open.  If anyone has stayed in a self-catering cottage up there and enjoyed yourself, can you let us know, we sure could use some leads!

Thanks!

We have stayed here 3 times: http://www.manesty.co.uk/. It is at literally at the foot of Catbells and a short walk to the shore of Derwentwater, where you can swim in hot weather.  Lots of good walks from the doorstep, and the property has been in the family (who live next door) for several generations, so your rent money is going back into the local community and not some anonymous letting agency or second home owner in London.
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing

A colleague of mine recommended this:

http://www.english-country-cottages.co.uk

She has stayed in cottages via this company (throughout the UK) several times and said she has always had a positive experience.

I intend to try them this year!  ;D

I have also camped there quite cheaply and I am not adverse to "roughing it" infact it was really quite good..the facilities for e.g toilets / showers etc were fantastic! far better than I thought and there was a great atmosphere in evening meeting up with ramblers and fellow Landrover society members ( We went there to go offroading ) sat around at night fire chatting, swapping places to see, Generally putting the worlds to rights and having a few giggles and beverages  ;)  I can't wait to go back.

We've staying on Lake Buttermere once, while my in-laws have several times. They usually stay here:
http://www.bowderbeck.co.uk/accommodation.html which seems to sleep up to seven people.

When we stayed this fall, we stayed in the Wood House guest house. http://www.wdhse.co.uk/cottage.htm
It was quaint, but a bit drafty and more "cabin-like". However, the location and views were stunning.

These are some of the photos I shot around the area just outside our cottage:

We came accross quite a few log cabin camps which were luxurious! Brockwood Hall was lovely.
