job offer in Sutton
« on: June 13, 2004, 12:39:50 AM »
Hi there,
I'm  a social worker in upstate New York and I successfully interviewed in NYC with the Borough of Sutton and have been offered a position starting in September. I'm seriously considering it (waiting for details of duties, salary, hours, etc).  I'd love to hear from anyone with pro or con ideas about this!  I'm a fairly flexible middle-aged, artistic woman who is a little wild at heart - in a legal way (colorful shoes, earrings, etc). I have an empty nest that allows me to sell my house, put my stuff in storage and kiss the boyfriend good bye for a while (at least).  Am I the type to be successful as an American in the UK?

Well, Sutton isn't exactly Central London but then it's hardly a backwater either. No matter what you hear about English sensibilities everything boils down to the individuals you meet. I've worked with some very stuffy Brits and I've worked with Brits that were as wild as anyone I ever knew in NYC (where I'm originally from). I think this is less about Sutton or the Brits and more about you. Are you flexible, adventerous, independent ? If yes then I'd say go for it. Planes fly both ways and you can always go back home.

Have a look at Sutton Council's website: http://www.sutton.gov.uk/Sutton/Home/ and see if that offers any furhter insights. Whatever you decide - best of luck.

Just wanted to say welcome to UKY!  I would say go for it as life is short!  While it is hard for some to move to a new country I think that ones life is always richer for having done so.

Thanks for the encouragement - I'm leaning towards accepting for the reasons most of you mention. I do think life is short and this is an opportunity that can't be denied!  It's just slightly overwhelming as I walk through my life thinking about all the STUFF I have to get rid of (or store) and the reality of moving. But I think I'm up for it. I"ll keep you posted. Thanks again.
