Passport stamp question
« on: June 14, 2004, 11:52:12 PM »
Hello,

My b/f and I are traveling to Germany at the end of the month.  Because I stayed with him the summer before last, and then I came here again, last August, plus, we travelled to Denmark in January, I know that Immigration won't like me much when I try to get back into the UK after this next planned holiday (beings I have so many stamps on my passport.)  I am fully aware of that, but here is my question...

Originally, depending upon if I were to get stamped again after this German trip, I planned to return to America in November, and my b/f will meet me there upon which time we will be married.  The reason we will do this then is because the airfare will be a bit less than it is now, plus, my divorce will be final in August of this year.

Now, if I buy my airline ticket now, for November, as proof for Immigration that I am most definitely leaving, will they stamp me, or will they not like the fact that I 'presumed' they would stamp me?  If that's the case, would it be better for me to just buy my ticket for July, before my passport stamp expires?  This way, no questions would be asked of me, and I'd just stay in the USA till he joined me in November, when we would be married.

OR...shall I chance getting the ticket for November, and if I have to change it because Immigration wants me to go back when my original stamp expires, will it be possible to just tell the airline to make it for next month instead....does anyone know how much it costs to change the flight?  In other words, would it be financially better for me to just buy the ticket back in July, when it's more expensive, but no hassle from them, or, would it be more money-wise to just buy it for November, and possibly get the new stamp I'll need, OR, if I have to change the ticket, would the fee be not all that bad?

I'm sorry to sound so confusing but didn't know how else to word it, argh!

Thank you so much for any assistance in this; I do appreciate any answers!

How long have you been in the UK this time?  And how much time have you spent in the UK during the last 6 months?

I'm afraid I can't really say when to buy your ticket.  I'm guessing having a valid return flight ticket is a good thing, but as far as Iimigration is concerned, just because you have it doesn't mean you'll use it.

My Dad changed a flight a couple of years ago, it cost him close to $200...but that was a domestic flight.  I'd call the airline and just ask what the fee is.

I could be totally wrong about everything, but maybe someone else will have better info. Good luck!

can you get an open return, ie one where you can book the date later? might be a little more expensive but could be worth it

Read the fine print before you buy it.  Most online companies sell tickets cheaper because they don't allow any room at all.  No changes.  No exchanges ect.  I once checked on tickets when I was in the UK to extend my stay.  I found out that it was cheaper to buy a round trip ticket from the US and just use the return...unfortuneatly if you don't take the first leg of the flight you forfeit the return (good thing I read the fine print).  I knew someone else who lost $400 because they accidently purchased the wrong dates and couldn't use it.  The website did state no changes no refunds so that money was up in smoke.

Hey, Thanks, everyone!

All worked out very well and I was stamped with no problems.  I'll be going back to the USA on 15 November, and my Fiance will join me on 28 Nov.  We'll be married on 4 Dec and all is right with the world!  Whew!  Glad I got that stuff out of the way.....what stress!!!
