Question about unemployed DB visiting US
« on: February 18, 2009, 01:16:01 AM »
I've had a little windfall and would love to invite my DB to the US for a visit.  Problem is he is unemployed.  I am petrified to invite him, get his hopes all up (he's never visited USA before), only to have him turned back.  Has anyone ever dealt with this situation?  It seems the perfect time for him to come over when he won't be messing up  work.  I can't go over there to the UK right now because I started a new job in December and won't have any time off until next Christmas.  I know a visitor can stay up to 90 days before they go back.  We are definitely NOT planning on getting married as we both have elderly parents who it is not an option to leave or to move to the other's country.  We just would like some time alone together.  Any thoughts over whether this will be a problem or what paperwork he can bring to assure them he is returning to the UK?  I' missing my favorite Englishman like crazy!  :(

Him visiting the US shouldn't be a problem. As long as he can show a round trip ticket, he should be OK. My BF came with me to the US (and we actually got married there as well on the same trip) all he was asked is where he was staying (he answered with me and my family and what the address was) he was asked when his return ticket was and stamped in. He wasn't asked about employment or what he did for a living. If he's coming for a vacation with his girlfriend then that is what he should say.

I'd give it a shot. Good luck to you, and remember whatever the IO asks him he just has to be honest.

Thanks Weby!  This is totally good news.  I so want to surprise him when the check comes in!  He is the light of my life and I so want to show him my world and have him meet my family.  Springtime here is lovely and he'd get to have his first 4th of July.  Too fun!

They do ask sometimes, and if they do, tell the truth.

When my DH was my DB, he came to visit me in the US and at JFK was asked what he did for a living. When he answered that he was a financial advisor, he was asked to define LIBOR and tell him what the previous day's number was. ::)
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Same for us. My now husband came over the the states to visit me between jobs (visa wavier program with a return ticket). That was back in 2003....he had no problems.

As others have suggested, just make sure that he is honest with his answers to any questions and there shouldn't be a problem.

Enjoy your time together!
