Any ideas for nearly no calorie snacks?
« on: March 04, 2009, 04:28:56 AM »
I have been looking for snack items that have very few calories.

I have the following:

Dill Pickles
Giardinera (pickled cauliflower, celery, peppers)
Tortilla Chips with Red Hot Salsa (I can only eat a couple before it burns)
Yoplait NonFat yogurts
Hard to open nuts (walnuts and pecans) (can only eat a couple before I give up)

I keep SoyJoy bars at work because they taste absolutely horrid and I wont eat them unless I am truly hungry.

Eat a little bit of cheese with your apples, or peanut butter makes it more exciting and keeps you from feeling ravenous after eating one - I know I do!

Snack a jacks
No sugar added hot chocolate
Veggies with reduce fat hoummous (peppers, cucumbers, celery, carrots)

I second the hummus!  Plus it's easy to make your own in a food processor and control the amount of oil, etc. that goes in.

hummous ? are you joking?
hummous is made with tahini which is sesame sead oils.

now chickpeas are a great source of  high carbs and they are slow release carbs... plus high in fibers.

to answer the OP , this dish is neither  a high or a  low calorie snack even when cooked with the law fat option.

there is no such thing as no calorie snack...

and forget abt nuts as well. they are FULL  of fats and high carbs. you cant have them in high amounts like veggies.
go for raw fruit and veg...

the problem with non fat food is that it is full of sugars ... so read the label before buying.

granted it won't taste as heavenly, and perhaps may not be "hummous" in the strictest sense of the word, but my MIL made some pretty fab tasting hummous without tahini...

I believe she just blended up chick peas and a bit of olive oil with some parsley. It was pretty darn tasty.

Life's too short to eat food that tastes horrid! Wouldn't you rather eat some luscious juicy fruit? Something that's healthy and that tastes good?

Cuppa Soup

Low Fat Greek Yogurt, mixed with cucumber, garlic and mint for a dip.  And dip in Veg such as celery, carrot sticks, Mangetout.  Eating celery burns off more calories than you are consuming  ;)

Peppers stuffed with mushroom rice.

Tin of plum tomatoes and throw in some basil - heat up and eat.

If you miss sweets - freeze some grapes and once frozen you can suck on them  :P

ETA: You will be hard pressed to find nearly no calorie snacks..only low calorie.  Unless you plan on just drinking water  ;)

I am going to second the veggies, they are very low calorie. I tend to munch on carrots.

Snap! Just make your own and either don't use Tahini or just use a tiny bit for flavour and then a tiny drip of olive oil (good for you oil!) and a squeeze of lemon juice to loosen up the chickpeas. Hummus is SUPER good for you when you make it yourself.

And I think that's the key here - rather than look for no calories, look for things that will add to your health and have them in moderation!  :D

I read this thread before going to bed last night and ended up dreaming about hummus.  I even had tried hummus without Tahini in the dream.  UK Yankee is invading my dreams!  [smiley=sleeping2.gif]

I just wanted to add to the hummus lovers' comments (others have already said this) that hummus can be low fat or high fat depending on the amount of oil and tahini used.

This won't work for everyone, but once I stopped being obsessed with calories and fat grams and focused more on healthy a healthy diet full of whole grains, veggies, fruit, and beans I lost weight.

Not all fat is bad! You need to eat some fat! Seaseme seeds are low in cholesterol.

You can make black bean hoummus with very little tahini as it doesn't seem to need as much "creamy factor" as chickpeas.

Nuts are not evil either.

This is what has been working for me.  I track through WW, but I find if I just eat heathier non-processed foods instead of counting every calorie or worrying every time I have a "bad" food, I just feel better and crave fresher things.  It's not like hummus will kill you, nor will the occasional handful of nuts.  I think the key is to slow down when eating and listening to your body, too.
