Yes, butter on sandwiches is also a Mid-western thing--maybe British immigrants brought it over?  A vegetarian cook book written by a Mid-western person had a veggie burger recipe which suggested buttering the burger bun before adding the burger.  Just not necessary.  Now *ketchup* on the other hand.....yum!

In&Out Burger butters their buns! (What a sentence!) And they are tres Californian, unheard of in the midwest.

No worries  ;D

Yeah, but In N Out also grills the buns - it's different.  Man, I miss those burgers.  And the milkshakes.  Too thick to get through a straw!
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I'd never had butter or spread on my sandwiches before moving here.  I have to admit, I like it :D  Not on everything, but with egg mayo and tuna, YUM!  (I do prefer real butter though, I had to convert my husband who had always bought spread)

I seem to recall DH saying it was something done during the war to increase calorie intake, but I think this predates WW2.   :P

Me too! I have always enjoyed spread on my egg mayo sandwiches when I visit.  Of course, I am generally of the opinion that butter makes everything better! ;D  Trying to imagine with peanut butter, though. . .

I don't like it on a regular sandwich, but I have to have lots of butter on a grilled cheese. Yum! And of course on the bun of a Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. :P Both of those use melted butter though, obviously.

Oh, and I'm another real butter person. Spread is just yuck. :-X

LOL! DH does this as well, no matter what the sandwich. He also butters crackers for cheese and cucumber. I have to admit, butter on toast before the peanut butter goes on is pretty darn good, so I can get behind that one, at least, it does make it less claggy and dry. And butter on crackers with cheese is ok, too. But butter on any other sandwich (unless it's a toasted sandwich) is gross to me. Is butter really necessary on a bacon butty?!

Yup. Confirmed. DH butters peanut butter sammiches, too. I knew you guys would be anxious to know.

Bacon butties! Who else would look at bacon and think, "it's nice, but it really needs some butter." And don't get me started on chip butties, the Atkins Slayer.

People in Japan do it to their sandwiches as well.
I took a baking course there and what I was told was
Bread tends to absorbe the moister from the filling so the bread will get soggy.
If you butter both sides, then the oil prevents the water from seeping through.
Whether that is true or not I don't know

I never spread anything on my bread.... not even one side!

That is true! Buttering tomato sandwiches is a good idea because they tend to get really soggy, too. Unfortunately, I only like mayo with my tom sammidges - so I just have to eat them very quickly before they have the chance to sog!  ;D

I find that toast helps keep away sogginess...
Chary, have you ever had a tomato, avocado, and cucumber sandwich with cream cheese (or mayo if you don't like cream cheese, but I am pretty sure I remember you are a cheese-a-holic)? It's theeeeeee BEST! But it works best on toasted bread or bun. (Minus the spread!)
