Provisional license on fiance visa
« on: March 07, 2009, 03:51:33 PM »
Hi all,

Is it possible for my fiance to get a provisional license whilst she's here on a fiance visa?  Or does she have until she has been "upgraded" to a spouse?

Thanks!

She can drive on her American license for the duration of her fiance visa.  However, my guess is that if she wants a provisional license she can get one.  You may want to call the DVLA to make sure, though.

I'm aware that she can drive on her US license for 12 months.  The reason she wants to get the provisional license is because it is a form of ID that isn't her passport, so she doesn't have to worry about carrying it around everywhere.

Ah, fair enough.  Well, like I said, you might want to call the DVLA to check, but if student visa holders can get provisional licenses, I don't see why fiance visa holders wouldn't be able to.

you might want to check and see if the places you're concerned with will accept provisional dl's as ID. I remember last year that there were some places (though details allude me) that only accepted full drivers license -- oh yeah, for instance doing cash exchange at M&S, etc.

Officially, you can apply for a provisional license from the moment you become resident in the U.K.

And being in the UK on a fiance visa counts as being resident, right?

yup! a fiancee visa is a settlement visa, so yes they are a resident.
