Out with the Old, in with the NEW!!!!
« on: June 17, 2004, 11:02:09 AM »
Why oh why does my DH not understand the concept of wedding gifts!?  When I told him our John Lewis Gifts were coming soon and we should think about what to do with the plates, cutlery, glasses, etc. either donate them or give them to friends.  What does he say, "well we can just see if we need them and put them away"  WHERE!???  We don't have a huge house, and the kitchen is as you may guess not large.  We have a lot of new stuff that needs to be stored as well since we lack shelving and counter space.  Where in heck does he think we can put it all?  This is also the case with sheets and towels and the rest.

Please if anyone has any ideas to share let me in on it.  I just want to have a nice house, full of OUR new things to start our life off with.  There are plenty of less fortunate people out there that can benefit.  Thanks.

I'm confused.  Are these gifts you registered for?  Why can't you exchange them or get rid of the old stuff and use them?  (Sorry...I've never heard of John Lewis Gifts, so I'm probably sounding kinda dumb.) :)

I think she's saying that they have 'old' stuff in the flat already and that the wedding gifts are arriving soon which she would like to replace the 'old' stuff with. John Lewis is one of the big department stores here.

I know what you mean, Stace. If we get what we register for, I'll have the same issues. But since I *control* the kitchen, I'll get rid of whatever I want (!!), and yes, I will give it to one of the charity shops.

For linens you want to keep but not use, I really like the vacuum bags since it compresses them down and keeps them damp-free. I get mine at Lakeland.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Thanks darlin' that's what I was saying!!!  I have now cleaned the kitchen as best I can. (Does Richard know how to clean?) It's just an older kitchen so there is some wear I just can't get rid off.  I put all the old stuff in the new stuffs boxes.  Not sure how to pack the glasses though.  I love those vacuum bags, I'll go get them tomorrow.  Great idea!!!

Aaah.  Sorry, didn't catch that.

If he insists, let him put the suff away somewhere, like in a box in a closet or under the sink.  Then, after a couple of months, you can drag out the now-dusty box, and say, "Do we really still need to keep these?"
That always works with my hubby

Or just make him tell you when he thinks you'll need the old ones!  Or just put your foot down.  ;D

And yes, friends or charity shop sounds good to me.

LOL!!!  Great idea!  I'll do that!  Maybe I'll just tell him to put it in the spooky loft that I never want to see the inside of ;)

My DH is the same!
What i sometimes do is i hide stuff, and then wait a year.
If he has not asked about it or wanted it within a year, then it goes out.

You people are good!!!

I'm on it!  Just found a great place for the dishes and glasses, and it's in the kitchen.

I wonder if he will even notice that I cleaned up?  If he is lurking here he will;)

Oh Stacey, have you never been to a car boot sale?  You load everything in your car, take it to a big field filled with other people and their junk and sell it all  :) :) :).  Trust me, just use the phrase 'might make a few quid' and he'll suddenly be all agreeable.   ;)
