Burning a CD from iTunes playlist -- WTF?!
« on: March 15, 2009, 04:14:24 PM »
Yes, of course i've done this before!  ;)

But suddenly I'm having a ridiculous problem that i don't understand, and just wanted to pick your collective brains about it, if i may...

I have a blank 80 minute/700mb CD-R.

I created a playlist that is about 70 minutes (cant remember how many Mb, but it was much less than 700).

When i click on 'burn disc', i get a warning saying that this playlist will not fit on the CD.
I thought that was kind of crap, but managed to cut another couple of songs, and still get the warning that it will not fit on the disc.

I cut more songs... got it down to a lame and ridiculous 9 songs  -- only 35 minutes of music.  And still the bastarn thing is giving me the 'your playlist will not fit on the disc' message.

I don't get it!   ???
And I'm not amused... >:(

What's going on here... any ideas?

Ok, after a little research, I think it could be either that the files that you are trying to burn are corrupt, which means you'll need to reimport them from their original CDs. Or, if they were purchased in Itunes, you can only burn them 7 times. The other thing is that if you are burning and Audio CD from MP3s the conversion will take up more room. I think the songs need to be AAC.

Hope that helps.  :-\\\\

Clearly Itunes hates you, or at least that is what I go with when technology acts up on me  ;)  Computers can be infuriating at times!

I am far from a tec. person so I can't be of much help but I guess I would try a new CD (doubt that would work but you never know)

MP3s (and other compressed formats) will definitely expand to much larger sizes when converted to straight PCM, which is what is recorded on an audio CD, but at the standard CD sampling rate you should get the full 60+ minutes recording time on a disk anyway, regardless of the original file sizes.

I've never used iTunes, and I don't know what software you're using for burning the CD, but check to see if you've accidentally set the PCM sampling rate to something in excess of normal CD quality.

I have this problem, too! I can't manage to burn a disc directly from Itunes. I find it easier to just take the files and copy them into a folder. I can then just burn them directly onto the CD from there through windows. Itunes definitely doesn't make it easy!

Most were purchased from iTunes, but have never been burnt before, so i'm within my 7 times.
When they didnt initially fit on the disc as audio cd files, i did try to do them as MP3s, but it wouldnt accept that either.  :-\\\\

Thanks for the research!  :-*

that's something i'd not thought of.
I'm fed up with it for today, but will consider this idea later... thanks.

I feel stupid asking, but... i've been trying to do this today, and can't seem to make it happen!
Is it because some of these tracks were purchased from iTunes, and therefore iTunes wont let me export them or move them out of iTunes?

I'm getting really hacked off with this!  >:(

Hey, let me play with it a bit here and I'll try to find out. I'm not sure if it matters that the tunes are from itunes or not. I'm working on it! :)

Ok. I made a test playlist in another folder with both my own files and iTunes files. I went into my music folder (under My Documents) and directly into the iTunes> iTunes music >*folder of the music I want to burn*. I right clicked on the file and copied it, then pasted it into my test burn folder. I clicked "burn" inside that test folder and it prompted me to put in a blank CD. I didn't actually burn, them, but I'm thinking that it at least was going to let me. Does this make sense?

Where is it hanging up for you?

Thanks for taking the time to help me with this.

Where it seems to be hanging up for me is that there doesn't seem to be an option to burn anything where i am.
I created a new folder in My Documents/My Music, and have moved all the files/songs into there.  But nowhere do i see an option to burn a disc from there.

So then i opened Windows Media Player, and i see there's an option to create a playlist and burn a CD from there, so i highlight my folder, right-click on 'Add to Windows Media Player List', but nothing happens.   I can't work out how to get my files from My Documents/My Music to the Windows Media Player to create this playlist!

You need to add the files from within the Media Player library rather than clicking on the folder itself. If you open up Media Player and click on the 'Burn' tab at the top of the media player, it will show your library in the main pane and then on the right hand side (where your playlist normally goes) there is a burn icon  and it says 'Drag items here to create a burn list', so you find your files in the media player library (from the main pane in the player) and drag them over to the right pane. Then you click on 'Start burn' and media player will burn the files for you (I did this two days ago, so I know it works).

I find it frustrating too (I tried to add files using the 'Add to Windows Media Player List' the other day and it didn't work either).

Usually if you add new music to your computer or it is stored in a folder somewhere, the tracks will be automatically added to your WMP library. But if you can't find them in the library, you can click 'Add to Library' in the Library tab at the top of the player and then it will scan through all of your folders (or whichever ones you specify) and add any music files that it finds that are not already in the library. It may take a few minutes to go through the computer, but it should add the tracks for you :).
