Aw, I can't believe she died.  How terribly sad for her family.

And her mother.  The Redgraves seem to have had a pretty hard time of it.  Sir Michael had Parkinson's, Lynn had breast cancer a couple of years ago.  Very sad indeed.

This is so tragically sad and shocking. Just a bang on the head, talking and laughing right after, then gone today -- it just goes to show how fragile life can be.

This stuff always makes me think how we need to cherish everyone we love -- not that you can live thinking every moment you see them might be the last, that would be grim. But just appreciate them because life can throw curveballs.  :\\\'(

Really really sad and tragic.

Will people be put off skiing?

I'm a skier and I wont be put off (doubt I'll wear a helmet either).

Made us wonder if she had accepted medical treatment immediately if the outcome would have been different.  I am hoping that one thing that comes from this is that it will encourage people to wear their helmets more often.  It might not prevent all serious head injuries skiing, but it might help prevent some.

I doubt it.  She never lost consciousness, she didn't puke and she didn't feel unwell at all.  Even if she'd gotten treatment, she'd likely have waited a bit to get a scan.  She went to hospital immediately she felt ill.  She apparently had a rare injury.

My ex fell and fractured his skull and never lost consciousness.  The main reason the ambulance was called was because he opened up a huge gash in his head (also ruptured his ear drum) and bled heavily.

I have skiied for 25 years and this wouldn't put me off at all.

I don't see helmets doing much, either, because the vast majority of injuries skiing aren't head injuries, they're leg injuries or abdominal trauma from hitting trees or other users running into someone.

A head bump like this can happen even in the home, let alone on the ski slope.

I've heard many a time of this kind of thing -- hard bang or concussion to the head, feeling fine except a headache, then serious complications arising as the hours pass.

It's why even when you feel fine, a hard knock, fall, even walking into the proverbial door, it's best to get checked out.

Helmets are becoming more and more prevalent in the US, especially on kids.  In fact, my mom bought one last year because her friends refused to ski with her until she did.  Good friends.

My uncle had a pretty severe stroke a few years ago as a result of banging his head on the door of his car.  The scariest part is that his doctors figured that he hit his head a week or so before he had the stroke.  Aside from a bit of a headache after the injury, he had no other symptoms before it happened.  Thankfully, he's okay now.

This story is so very sad.

It really worries me because my husband is an absolute *animal* on the football pitch. He heads crazy-fast balls that others won't even touch. I can see how that could cause a tragic injury.

Was there any report that she suffered from a 'soft skull' condition? I heard that briefly but haven't seen it written up anywhere.

Nothing was mentioned in the articles that were written today, after the autopsy was done. All I heard was that she died of a epidural hematoma, which is that nasty bleed between the brain and the skull itself. They say a decent percentage of those who suffer it don't have any immediate symptoms, and usually by the time they do start to exhibit the symptoms it's too late since surgery is really the only way to get rid of it, and by the point that the symptoms manifest the pressure has already caused brain damage :(

It's really sad, and just one of those things that happen--a sudden as any other sort of hemorrhage, it puts life in perspective at least  :-\\\\

It's known colloquially as 'talk and die' syndrome.

This is very sad.  I'm now a believer in wearing a helmet after being in a motorcycle accident about 15 years ago.  I was thrown from the bike and I wasn't wearing a helmet.  When I hear about stories like this I think about how lucky I was.  I just feel so terrible for her entire family.
