Yorkshire Yanks Book Club - Sat April 4th Meeting
« on: March 27, 2009, 08:26:23 AM »
Hey everybody!  :)

You know that Saturday April 4th is a week from this Saturday, doncha?

The plan previously agreed was that we'll be discussing Taste: The Story of Britain Through Its Cooking.

However, we have not yet agreed a meeting time and a venue - somewhere in either York or Harrogate.  Any thoughts on what everyone wants to do?  Have we all just lost interest?

I'll be honest and say I've only read 1 or 2 chapters of the book.  I might get a little bit more read, but my reading attention has been diverted (and engrossed) lately to the Twilight book series - just starting the third book now.

So let's figure out if we're still meeting & what the plan is!  :)

C, I've been talking to S about whether to plan for York or possibly up this way - I was hoping to post a new thread tomorrow (once I get more than two free seconds to rub together) with details.

Cool - thanks, Meg!  :)

Also, for May, I think we were leaning toward May 9th - so as not to conflict with the bank holiday weekend & that Cinco de Mayo fest down in London, which looks like it's headed for May 2nd (but not sure)?

I need for other peeps to organise the May, June & July reading club meetups - because I'm not going to be around for a good chunk of May (including the 9th), just getting back in time for June, and then we'll be having a lot of stuff going on until the end of July.  Incidentally, the first Saturday in July is - July 4th!!!  :)

Hoping to read Revolutionary Road (HME's pick) for August - but between now & then (May - July) is open AFAIK.

Sorry I've not been around the boards in a while, I've been busy, too.  I've been poking around facebook, though, so I've not been out of touch/reach entirely, I suppose.

I've not read much of the book, either, but I have a bit of time today, and will try to read as much as possible by the 4th.

I don't have any preference about meeting place, as I can get pretty much anywhere, so I'm easy.

I'll just keep checking back to see what plans evolve, whether that be a meeting place, a postponement, or whatnot.  I just wanted to let y'all know I was interested, and reading, and willing to go along with whatever plans are made. :)

hello all!  Since DH has a job now (yay!), this means we're no longer stuck on a super tight budget so I can go places now :P  Which means that I'm planning on coming to this meeting.  I haven't read the book yet, but I'll get it off Amazon and see if I can get through it next week.

I've just started chapter 4, only 22 chapters to go.   :)   Wherever we meet us usually good for me.

Right.  At the moment, we've got two options:

1. A pub in York (checked out by persephone)

2. A cafe here in Stockton (which serves food until 2:30 - after that, we could decamp to mine)

I'm fine with either - mainly, I'm just being selfish and thinking that I'd just like to stick a bit closer to home than Harrogate or Leeds this time round, as while I love both places the travel time usually means that the entire day is spent doing book group things, which is great on one level but sucks on a "this is my first Saturday off in weeks" level. ;D  (York is a much more manageable trip for me, which means that Option #1 isn't necessarily out.)

So really it depends on A) who's planning to come and B) where you'd like to meet!

I know the book is quite long this month, and that as the weather gets nicer most of us have less time and/or motivation to read ;D but as usual I expect that the meeting will only really be 20% book discussion and 80% catching up/chat/etc. so don't feel that not having read the book will preclude you from attending this month's meeting! :)

I'm headed back to work in a few minutes but I'll check back tonight and see how things are looking...

Unfortunately, work calls AGAIN that weekend :(  I need to switch the schedule so I don't work the weekends of the book club meetings!  Afterwards, I have a 2 hour driving lesson :(  Not looking forward to that but it must be done!  Everyone beware and warn people to stay off the roads!!  xx

Sorry I have been totally incommunicado lately; just have no idea where the time has gone really.   I'm not going to be able to come out for the April 4th meeting (for which I was actually kind of excited to go to York, since despite living in Harrogate since late October I've still not been to York!).  The May meeting - if held May 9th - is going to be a dicey proposition, since the grammas are arriving that week (Tuesday, to be precise) and, well, I'm going to be a disaster trying to get the house set up for two octogenarians.

HOWEVER!  I'd like to propose that our June meeting - I presume scheduled for June 6th - be a "Bring your favorite poem to share" theme, and perhaps thrown wide open to the wider UKY community as a Yorkshire Yanks meeting in the Harlow Carr gardens.  Admission is 7 - however if we can book as a group of 10+ in advance it's only 6.  There's a Betty's on sight and hopefully the weather will mean a proliferation of blooms.

Objections?  Suggestions?

That's a great idea exjerseygirl.   :)
And I found out this weekend that I will be unavailable on April 4th.   :(

I'm planning to be there - just let us know when & where!  :)

I'm wondering - persephone if you're out there! - if we are going to meet in Stockton, will you be driving or taking the train?  Let me know.  :-*

I haven't read much of the book.  :-[

Hey!

I haven't read the book (I too got caught up in Twilight.. I've read all three and await the return of book 4 on Thursday to be caught up again!).

I vote for York for a meet up if possible.  I won't be able to add much to the book discussion, but general chat I'll be good for.

For the May book I thought we were reading She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb, unless it got vetoed at the last meeting that I missed.  If not that one, then perhaps Twilight, since it's an nice easy read!

Hope everyone is well!

Okay.  If we're going to be a smallish group this time round, I'd be up for just having folks to my place from the start, rather than faffing about with the cafe - would everyone be okay with that?  Cinbin, would that work for you at all?  Right now I'm counting:

persephone
Mrs R
springhaze
EGG
cinbin

with regrets from exjerseygirl and swelch2.

Lunch, or just nibbles and drinks?  I'm cool with whatever. :)  I do have two cats, though (if there's anyone left in the world who doesn't know that already!) so if anyone's allergic then we might need to utilise the cafe option after all.  (I know A and B aren't, because they have cats themselves!)

Thoughts?

Many apologies - I'm reluctantly going to have to pass on this one (although I have read the book and would be interested to hear what people think). We were in London all last weekend and are away for Easter weekend, and a lot of mundane things need doing at home in between unfortunately!

Hope the meeting goes well.
