xe.com currency exchange/transfers
« on: March 28, 2009, 02:30:30 AM »
i know we've talked about this one... I just wanted to ask for a recap on who has actually used their service and has been fully satisfied with it.   I know a few people have used it, but if I could get one more confirmation that it is all good and valid, I would appreciate it much, thank you :)

They're actually sort of the same as customhouse.com (Custom House) so if you have used that please let me know as well!

Thank you!

I've just recently used them a few times for one off transfers because my moneycorp contract is nearly up... and yes... xe are fine, they do what they say they are going to do in the time they say they are going to do it. I dont really know what you want to hear.  What are you so worried about?  They don't run off with your money or anything.

They just take it from point A (UK checking account for me) to point B (US checking account) at the agreed upon rate in about 5 days.

I use them and am completely satisfied.  They have always been helpful, professional, and my money arrives on the other side in about 3 days.
I am the architect of my destiny.

I am another satisfied with their business and service.  Even when I do muppet head things and call they are helpful and efficient.  With online banking and their email updates, everything goes through within 3 days.

Same here.  I've used them a bunch of times with no trouble.

When I first arrived in the UK, I did a trial run of sending myself money from the US to the UK.  On the US side I was able to do ETF and I had a check mailed to my UK address.  It was a quick easy process (although I did already have my account set up before hand.)

I'm now wanting to send money from my UK account (NatWest) back to the US.  XE.com seems to indicate that I'd have to wire them the money from the NatWest account, though in a lightly greyed out 'NOTE' on the site is says that BACS can be used.   Is BACS the method of Online Payments that most banks seem to have as a free option?

I'm sure NatWest would charge me to wire the money to XE, but if I could do an 'automated payment' for free, I'd be much prefer that.

So for those transferring money out of the UK using XE, how do you fund your XE account?

Thanks,
Duane

I (well, technically my wife) use it often - we transfer money most months to her US bank account for student loan payments (oh the joys!)

We pay using BACS (which is free).  When you book the transaction, you select to pay by wire from your UK account.  It then gives you instructions (sort code, account number etc) on how to pay.  After you've sent the money from your UK account, you email them telling them when you sent it, how much etc (again instructions provided).

Then a few days later you get an email saying the transaction has been completed, and a couple of days after that it should be in your US account.  Generally takes 5 working days in my experience (though part of that depends on the speed of payment from your UK account - I think they are starting to make them quicker).

Ive used them about 4 times and am planning on sending money to my checking account in the US again through XE in the next couple of months...I like the convenience of doing it from home instead of having to go into the bank, fill out forms, etc..the employee at XE was quite helpful with my first transaction as I chatted with him online..

If anyone has any questions regarding currency exchange and transfers, please do not hesitate to let me know.  I work for Moneycorp here in our Florida office and assist UK clients with transferring funds to the US same working day.

Always happy to assist,
Kelly Cutchin

OK this is slightly related...

I want to transfer money to a new UK account, but do I need to actually have the money (or a check of some sort) in hand to open the account? I have a Chase account in the US and was hoping I could just go to the UK, open an account and transfer the majority of my money. What I didn't know, was how to go about depositing the initial amount in the account-will they wait for me to transfer or do I need to show up w/ a wad of cash? (hope I'm making sense!)  :-\\\\

Assuming your account doesn't require a minimum balance, I don't think you need to make a deposit in order to open one. However, you can always throw a 20 in there if they ask for something!
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I have used Paypal to transfer smaller amounts of money to the UK. It doesn't have any sort of fee attached and from there, it can be transferred directly to a checking account etc. :)

I use XE all the time. I've found that they have the best exchange rates and no other fees. Using my bank would give me an unfavorable exchange rate plus a £17 fee, so XE saves me a lot.

I used them when I lived in Ireland a lot and just did my first transfer from the UK. Is a bit of a pain to set up at first (they have to call you, etc.) but I've saved so much that it's worth it.
