Sending Sponsor's Passport
« on: April 07, 2009, 10:29:19 PM »
I could not send my spouse's (sponsor's) passport with my spousal visa application as it was being renewed at the time (the renewal took much longer than expected).

Of course it arrived the day after I sent my visa application to the NY Consulate.

Question: should I now send my wife's passport to the consulate and ask them to attach it to my application?

Or will the (uncertified) photo copy of her old passport be enough to issue my visa?

thanks

The photocopy of her passport will only be sufficent if you also include her original birth certificate. Hopefully someone else will come along with advice on what to do now.

Why would you send off the application without the passport or a certified copy of it? Why not WAIT for the passport renewal or why not send her birth certificate at least?

Not being funny...just asking.

ETA: When did you send the visa application originally and how was it sent...post...courier?

As far as I know (and I had a similar question a short time ago so I gathered a ton of info about it), they won't outright reject you just because they have only a photocopy. If the rest of your application is in order, they might approve it anyway, or they might follow up to ask for the original or a certified copy.

That's *probably* right.

Should be okay.  Send it, or a certified copy, asap.

Thanks all.

To make short story long...

Visa app was overnighted on Monday 4/6, arriving today 4/7. Got email from NY at 1:30pm ET saying it arrived "safely".

I didn't know about the "if you don't have the sponsor's passport, send the birth certificate" rule. The reason I didn't wait is we didn't have any indication on how much longer it would be and we weren't getting any response from the UK Embassy in DC even though we paid the $3 per minute to phone in an enquiry.

Her passport was issued by UK Embassy in Tokyo in 1999 and they didn't add a barcode, so DC Embassy had to contact Tokyo Embassy to "authenticate" (?) it. Tokyo did not respond in a timely fashion apparently.

We sent the passport renewal off in early February, expecting it back within 30 days. When it did not show after 60 days it started to jeopardize my visa application (I already did biometrics and bought flights -- stupid in retrospect. Hindsight...). We tried to get a photocopy of her old passport notarized, but of course that can't be done without the original. Our local bank indicated they don't notarize government documents anyway. New one on me.

So... I guess I'll be sending off the new passport to NY Consulate tomorrow with CLEAR message that the passport goes with my visa application packet.

thanks
