Anyone else use a spreadsheet to help you pack??
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:16:04 PM »
We're getting ready for our bajillionth flight across the ocean, and I've got it down to a fine art. Especially because i've got two small ones, I find that packing by a pre-prepared list goes much better than just hoping I rememebr everything at the last moment.

I came up with my "pack list", along with a sort of last minute "to do" for long visits..... (including making sure the trash is taken out because WOW you don't want to come home to 2 week old scraps in the trash, which I have done)... and it has made travelling SO much easier.

Anyone else do this? Or do I just have an unnatural love affair with Excel?? :)

Well there is no surprise that you'd be an excel lady cait! My husband makes fun of me for it, but the spreadsheet has reduced travel disasters significantly. :D

Out of curiosity, how does a spreadsheet differ from a plain ol' list?  Or are the one and the same?

A spreadsheet has a column where you can neatly tick things off! Plus, you can highlight various things in different colours to code them! (Yes, I'm a geek)

spreadsheets can be easily alphabetized as well, and alphabetization is totally my boyfriend.

No, but I started to build a Gantt chart to deal with the logistics of my last year in the States. It took me too long to learn to drive the software, though. Stupid shareware.

Oh I live my life by lists and to-do lists. I had them coming out of my behind during preparations to move anything that ever meant anything to me 6,000 miles across the planet. And I still felt stressed out and like I was making it even more confusing for myself.

I wish I had had you there to keep it all straight, as you sound like you have no stress at all.

Try not to judge too harshly those of us who, not being used to uprooting, and despite every effort to stay organized, still found packing our life away for shipment a stressful and messy experience with all the nice lists in the world stacked around our ears.

Well I'm certainly used to uprooting! I've moved 22 times in 14 years, I guess packing & moving is something I know pretty well. :D

I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT!  My mind is blown.  Seriously.  My inner organizational geek thanks you.

I recently took a course at work on excel (being begging for years for it!) I freaking LOVE it!! The instant chart wizard is fun!

I've downloaded a few list apps for my ipod Touch. One is for packing. I can make permanent lists and organize them by type of item, etc... so much fun. I've already begun "packing" for my trip this summer!! I've also got a grocery list app and to do list app! Hee! Organization and lists RULE! ;D

I'm not an Excel geek but I do make packing lists and lists for other things that need to be done. I've always got scraps of paper with half-crossed off lists in my bag, pocket, or on my desk!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Although pretty much every other aspect of my life is computerized, I can't get into electronic lists.  I write things down by hand.  I think I need to have something tactile, or I don't remember to consult it.  Plus, it's fun to cross things off.

You can still do that electronically!  ;D
