private dental insurance (US)
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:15:54 PM »
It would seem that my husband's employer does not offer dental insurance (not unexpected). I was always fortunate enough to have it through my job when I lived here but now that we don't, I'm wondering if private insurance is worth it?

Anyone have any recommendations or thoughts?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Just saw a TV ad for Delta Dental saying they were offering it to individuals.  Don't know what the cost would be.  But they are very widely accepted by dentists and pretty good.

I had DeltaDental in California and I can highly recommend it, the options and coverage was excellent. This was through my employer though. Here's the link to see if they offer individual plans in your area: http://www.deltadental.com/Public/Subscribers/IndCoverage.jsp?DView=SubscriberIndividual.

Pacificare offers a great private plan, but it's not nationwide

Like others have mentioned, Delta Dental is very good.

Does his regular health insurance plan have a dental option you can buy into?

I was going to have my teeth cleaned in when I was visiting the US and was willing to pay for it. I think it was around $120. Then my mom reminded me that the dental school at the local community college offers treatment at a super reduced rate since it's the students practicing on you. If you're just looking for a cleaning, don't have major problems, and aren't afraid of dental students you could look into something like this. There's a dental school in Baltimore that might offer treatment.

Thanks Kim. I don't know if there is something we can buy into. I've asked DH to email the powers that be. As a Brit, he's having a hard time wrapping his head around this stuff.

I'll look into the dental school, too. As well as the other links suggested. Thanks everyone!
