Ohio Gal Moving in Feb 2010 to Crawley.
« on: April 30, 2009, 03:49:32 AM »
Hello all! I am moving to the UK after I marry the man of my dreams in Feb. I am wanting to move my stuff like my bed, clothes, pictures, DVDs, sentimental stuff, and decorations. Any suggestions on the best moving company and how much it will cost and how long it will take for it to get to me in the UK?

Where are you in Ohio?  I moved from there as well (Cincinnati), and had a mostly positive experience with Stevens International, though their local contractor flubbed it up a bit, but in the end all was fine.  It took nearly 3 months, but Christmas delayed things a bit.  Might want to consider twice about the bed if you require a mattress/boxspring because that's not too common here.  Unless you're bringing yours or have a platform bed.  I brought my headboard/footboard and haven't been able to use it yet...I borderline regret bringing it but I love it.  Hoping to sort it out via IKEA...but I digress......
It is quite expensive to ship.  There's lots of companies out there so get several quotes, but it's definitely not cheap.  I'd probably pare down a bit more if I did it again....
Let me know if you'd like any more specifics on the moving company...
Good luck!

I moved from (Cleveland) Ohio, but mainly brought only what I could fit in suitcases and paid excess baggage fees (which at the time were about $50 per 75lb bag).  However excess baggages fees have since gone up and luggage limits have gone down.   :P

I agree with Rubygirl in regards to the bed.  Space in houses in the UK is less than in the US, so you may find that the bed you love just won't fit (as well as the issues of getting replacement sheets and matresses etc).

Depending on which airports & airlines are near you, you might want to check with them for quotes.

Good luck!

check http://www.upackweship.com.They gave me a rough estimate of around $600 for my stuff, but that doesn't include a bed.
