Blimey Sarah, you little mind-reader!!

I have been thinking about this the last few days, filing just before he goes, just trying to work out now how it would change the application, what sort of a timeline it would give us, for example, if I applied for police certs soon, would they expire before we get around to filing and so on(if we are not quite ready).

Our circumstances are changing back & forth almost weekly right now, we have freed up some money unexpectedly, been given a car in the US that will last us a while, but we still need some more funds before we file.

I guess what I am nervous about is, filing and then him not getting a job so quickly and how that might scupper the rest of the application, I don't want the application to run us, rather than the other way around.

Trying to remain calm and keep it all in it's natural order, I probably sound silly, but all this overtook our lives before and I am really keen for that not to happen this time, especially with less funds to fall back on.

HOWEVER- thank you for being concerned/organised/kind enough to point this out to me :)

Best
Sheril

Just wanted to make sure you werent setting yourself in for a hampered application, ya know. Trying to look after my fellow repats.

If you dont mind me asking, do you have children that are dependants? Do you have a house (in US or UK) / and or a stock portfolio/savings/bonds? Just currious, trying to get an idea of how not having that job in the US when he files that affidavit would effect your application.  BTW, the police certificate is good for one year from the date its issued. I applied for Martin's and got it issued on October 23 2002 and we had the interview on October 21 2003. Talk about cutting it close. I think if you applied for yours now you'd be well within the one year expiration date by the time you get your interview. And its one less thing to think about.

Take care
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Youre doing  a grand job of picking up things for us (frankly don't know how you manage it all with your own life, I have always been extremely well organised, but with my job, my life and various other bits & bobs I have trouble retaining all the info these days!- oh yeah, old age too, turned 35 on Sunday!)
No children/no house/no stocks/no nothing! (long story, but got screwed out of half my parents house when my StepDad married last year and we suddenly found ourselves in very expensive (south coast) rented property with my precious dog who had early renal failure, the combined  debt has risen and we are being uber careful to repay everything and structure payments so we can be as clear as possible to move back.

I was thinking that if hubby arrived back and no job was forthcoming for a while, all we would then have is my income in the UK (he will be able to live rent free over there with his Mom), but it worries me it might turn out like that and would affect the AOS and our general timing.

Thanks for Police Certificate info, I knew I had read it somewhere - Blimey, you certainly were lucky there :o I am going to send off for that then, like you said, one less thing to be concerned about ( until we win the lottery!)

No, I don't mind you asking- it might just help someone else one day who comes across a similar situation and you have been more than giving yourself (and others on this board) :)

Well I emailed the embassy as well. They said they are currently working on apps filed May 12, and we filed 3 weeks after that, so hopefully that means we'll get our interview date in 3 weeks or so. Everything seems to be moving along just fine...
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

Hello everybody,

I've just found this thread and can give you our update.    Here's how our timeline went:

April 20 - filed I 130
June 24 - received NOA (9 weeks after filing)
June 28 - requested police report when we realized we goofed and should have done this sooner!
June 28 - sent DS 230 part I
July 14 - sent checklist
July 16 - received police report - yeah!

We are now waiting on the interview date.

I'm afraid we lost a little bit of time with the oversite on the police report.  I've been pre-occupied with the house sale and getting my son sorted out for school in the US.  In the overall scheme of things, I don't think it will make much of a difference, though.

Good luck to everybody!

Sarah, I just have to say how well organized and helpful you are.  What a gem!

Also for everybody else to compare notes, here are a couple of other details of our case:

I'm the American sponsor who is a housewife-mom w/ no income.  I have to be the sole sponsor on the Affidavit of Support so we are using our assets, which consists mainly of the capital of our house here in the UK (house is currently under offer but we've not yet exchanged contracts).

As I have no income and therefore am not required to pay taxes, I called the IRS helpline.  They were extremely helpful and sent me a form letter which states that you are not required to file if your income is below the required limit.  I thought this would be helpful to have on IRS letterhead, in addition to my statement, for the I-864.

Tony, my DH, has been to the doctor to get the innoculations required.  Amazingly, our GP was able to extract his health records all the way back since the day he was born.  The nurse is sending us a letter verifying that the innoculations were administered.

Additional things that I will bring to the interview to help our case are:  statements that show we have joint, active credit in the US, US birth certificates and passports of our two children, my old 1040's from before we moved here that show I have the ability to work and earn, Tony's P60's from here that show he's employable, Tony's social security card, contract on house sale (assuming we have one by the interview date), my son's application for school in US, the order we place for the international transfer of funds (again, assuming we have contract on house sale.)

This is probably more than is needed, but I want to be safe rather than sorry.

Good luck!

One other thing - I keep thinking of things...

When we decided to start the whole process, we worked on "the longest case scenario" basis, which they said could be up to six months.  So we put the house on the market, took a quick trip to Chicago over Easter, then filed the I-130 as soon as we got back.

The reason Tony has a SSN number is because he worked in the US for three years '93-'96....

Thanks everybody!

We received the NOA on June 24, which is before I found UKY and started posting.  I just found this thread today and posted our timeline.  It appears as though we did things more piecemeal than others.

We  goofed on the police report because we didn't read through everythng as thoroughly as we should have.  We've been so busy and in the evenings when the kids go to bed, we found we had no concentration to sift through all of the papers and info.

When we finally did read the details in the packet that came just after getting the NOA, we realized we should have been better organized.  Nevertheless, I think in the overall scheme of things, it will only hold us up by a few weeks.  Serves us right for not paying closer attention!

Hi All,

Richard and I have some good news too! Luckily I am working from home today and in through the mail slot popped our NOA!   :D

We are now just waiting for our interview date. I checked the embassy website but they haven't updated it yet regarding processing. The current one says all apps being processed on or before June 16th and they received ours on June 17th.....I am hoping we are close!

Julie

Thanks Sarah and Laurie!  :)

Hopefully this coming week we will have some news. I plan to email the embassy. It would be great to be able to plan our actual move back date. The remaining issue is getting a job back in the states (intra company transfer again)...which I am working on and necessary for the affidavit of support.
