I had tempeh for dinner last night because of this thread!

There was a thread on this last year where all the consumers of veggie products listed their favourites, so a search would be handy.

I am a Pesky, but seldom cook fish at home, so we are almost totally veg.  We use a lot of meat substitutes...Cauldron or Sainsbury own brand veggie sausages (much nicer than Linda McC) and Sainsbury own brand burgers are imo the best.  We use a lot of quorn fake chicken pieces, for pies and curries, fake beef for stir frys, fake mince for chilli and spg bol.  RealEat make the best mince.

All of the above are low in carbs and low in fat, so pretty healthy, and Dan (very much a meat eater) enjoys my cooking, so I guess they make pretty good substitutes.

If you have allergies to fungus, or are vegan, then quorn won't be suitable, but the RealEat mince and most fo their other products are made from soya and are also vegan.

As for eating out...every Italian and Indian restaurant will have a wide number of veggie options.  Good chinese will as well.

Yeah - I  have to say this -  I like the Quorn burgers, and some of their other stuff, but the mince and the sausages (the plain ones) leave a bit to be desired.    I'm not a super vegetarian or anything like that, but I have found that the soy/tofu products have a longer shelf life in my fridge than meats/chicken/fish, so I tend to buy them so my groceries last longer.

I would love to find some of Amy's burgers here - the stores near me carry her bowls and burritos, but I haven't found her veggie burgers yet.  LOVE the Big Texas and the All-American.  By no means do they taste like an actual burger, but they are still very tasty.

Is tempeh easily available in the UK? That's one of my favorite veggie soy products. It's sooooo good marinated in soy sauce and sauteed in a bit of oil, then mixed into stir fried veggies!

Bumping this old thread as I bought some tempeh today. It's Impulse brand and here is their website: http://www.impulsefoods.co.uk/index.html

They do not currently have a list of stores that carry their products, but perhaps an email to them might help.  :)

Are you kidding? Im my, admittedly limited experience, UK is tons more veg-friendly than US is!
Ditto that.

I think those other ones are Fresh & Wild which was bought up by Wholefoods. I don't think they have changed them all to actual Wholefoods Stores (yet). They are still good though!

Last time I was in Camden about 2 weeks ago, it had been signposted "Wholefoods" and they certainly had a lot of the brands.

Thanks!

I've been trolling the local Sainsbury's to find what else they have. I've become addicted to their Quorn sausages (both varieties! Yes! Varieties!!!!). Holy cow will I miss those after my trip!

I like their veggie burgers quite a bit.  And their fake deli slices are really good!    I also throw the Cauldron marinated tofu in just about anything.

I saw the cauldron products. Might have to try those (tonight?? Could do stirfry!) I was wondering about the Quorn slices. The kind you can get in the US taste like crap, so I wasn't sure about them. I will give them a try, too. I love trying new stuff! :)

I love a stir fry with them.  Although I start picking the bits out of the pan before it makes it to the dish.  I also think they are fun for a heathier "fried" rice, instead of chicken or something.  (I don't really fry or use a heavy stiry fry sauce, but use one of those low cal sprays (Fry Light) and throw in some of the cauldron tofu, with some veggies, and sometimes an egg, if I've got one, and toss it together with some brown rice and soy sauce.

Well, I made a stirfry last night! It went down well, even with the non-veg! I used the marinated cubes and was eating them before I even got to cooking. Yum! I added chopped shitake mushrooms, onion, yellow pepper (I still can't believe these are only 50p at Sainsbury's!! Those are like $2+ at home!), shredded carrot and baby corn and snow peas. I love that you can get the baby corn in the fresh veg area!! Not watery canned ones! I'm soooo gonna miss the food here when I go back home at the end of the summer. :(

Sounds yummy! I have invited my veggie brother in law and his carnivorous wife to dinner at some point, so I am thinking of doing my regular cashew chicken stir-fry for her and hubby and then a vegetarian cashew and tofu (I love those Cauldron marinated pieces) for BIL and myself (I'm not vegetarian, just like tofu a lot!). Although, I've been wanting to experiment with making some PF Chang's-style tofu lettuce wraps for a while... maybe I will give it a go when he comes over (anyway, he doesn't know what they are like, so if I screw it up, he won't know the difference!  :P) I can't remember exactly, but it's tofu, water chestnuts, and scallions, for sure, just can't remember the rest (if any of the rest of you know, then feel free to chime in!)

I tried the chicken style pieces last night, and while it's all in the flavoring, I found the consistency to be good and a really good addition to a stir fry.  I'm going to try them with tomato sauce and pasta later in the week.
