Best sushi restaurant in London
« on: May 18, 2009, 05:14:06 AM »
Hello,

Moving in July from NYC and wondering what are the best sushi places in London. We love sushi and eat them twice a week, so I'm looking for a good affordable place where we could go frequently (not like nobu and such).

What's your favorite?
Thanks in advance for the feedbacks!

Yo Sushi is not bad but probably not up to NY standards. I just like their revolving sushi bar.

there's good sushi in London?  ;D  I've been to Yo Sushi! in Bloomsbury and it was decent, however other than that I can't say I've been to many memorable sushi places in the City.

I have to admit that there is a definite lack of good sushi places in the mid-range.  Nobu and the like are obviously fantastic, but most people can't afford eating there twice a week.  Although...I did find Nobu Berkeley to be fairly reasonable for a treat.  Then there are tons of the conveyer belt sushi places like Yo Sushi, but these aren't very good and very uninspiring.   A new place opened up near me in North London recently and it was very good.  Much more like the places I was used to in DC and Boston.  It's called Tosa and there is another location in West London too.

I think there are a lot of small independent places in Soho, but I can't recommend any particular place.

My only other complaint about UK sushi is that the rolls aren't as creative as Sushi back home.  No fun Catepillar Rolls or Philadelphia Rolls. I know a sushi purist won't agree with me, but I like the fun rolls. :) Let us know if you find any place good and not too expensive.

There are places, but they tend to be independent restaurants only known to locals.  We go to a FAB place around where we live (it's in Crystal Palace), but that's obviously not where tourists are going to be!  It's pretty darn cheap for sushi and very good quality.  But like I said, these sort of places are more for locals who know where they are...:(

I second this recommendation for the Tosa in West London.

Another great place (also in West London) for sushi is Sushi Hiro, located across the road from Ealing Common tube station:

I also like Misato (on Wardour Street, near Piccadilly Circus) for their cheap and cheerful sushi bento box.

Sushi Hiro, Acton.  Seconded strongly!  The atmosphere is cafeteria,  but the quality and prices are great!  Also, when in Acton.. there are a couple of good Japanese grocers.  One is just down the street from Sushi Hiro, the other is.. eep, can't remember.  Close to a train station.

Tosa is pretty good, but a bit pricey for izakaya food.

LBA, if that is the place I am thinking of, I never tried their sushi, but they have delicious sweet bean buns!

I'm not too sure what a good price range is for sushi...
But if you want to keep the prices low, you probably want to go during lunch and catch their dinner menus.

My recommendations:
Edokko - this is one of my favorite restaurant.  It's a bit hidden away on Holborn.  Be prepared to go early because it's packed by 11am and you have to wait for an hour usually.  And if you don't feel like sushi, they have a ton of other JP comfort foods that I love
Matsuri - it's a bit on the higher end I suppose but it's a lot of food.

Thanks for your answer, I am not sure we are going to move anymore now if there are no good sushi!!  :\\\'(
More seriously, it is disappointing but I hope we can find something decent. We'll definitely try a lot of them so I'll post back once we found something nice.

Karin, yeah we did notice there was not a lot of creative rolls. We thought it was only the places that we went to though... oh well.

Thanks for your contribution.

I NEVER wanted to go near sushi, let alone sashimi, until I went here with Stacey & friends when I lived there.  Now I LOVE it!  This was my favorite place to go - cheap, GREAT food.
Yo Sushi! is great as well, but Misato is FANTASTIC!

Another endorsement from me for Sushi Hiro. Fab place!

I also love Misato if I am in central London although the queue can be off putting if you're really hungry.

Yes, good point, especially as they are Wagamama and Wahaca style in their no reservations/first come first served approach.

DH and I have nearly abandoned the queue at Misato more than once when hunger pangs nearly overtook us.  Best to go during non-peak times or when one is not feeling like they are starving!  ;D
