Healthy, high energy snacks (calories not an issue)
« on: May 27, 2009, 08:20:57 PM »
Howdy all

I've got a friend who is sleep deprived and has no spare time (1 year old baby at home, both parents work full-time).  We work a really physical job (8 hours of walking, bending, lifting etc), so calories are not the issue.

Any recommendations for low-prep time, substantial and stablizing snacks?  We take turns bringing in afternoon treats, and I'd like to start bringing better choices than biscuits etc.

How about nuts and dried fruit?  You can mix different kinds to get different flavour combinations.  Nuts have lots of protein and dried fruit has vitamins and low GI sugars.  Cranberries and blueberries have lots of antioxidants.  And you can buy them in bulk and pack them in little plastic bags for easy transport.

These cookies are healthy, filling and easy to make. Also, you can add other dried fruit or nuts. Oh yeah, they taste good too.  :)

3 ripe bananas
1 cup diced dates (no pits)
1/3 cup oil
2 cups whole oats
1 tsp vanilla

Mix all and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then drop by teaspoonfuls on a
cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until brown on top.

How about ants on a log?  You know, peanut butter in celery with raisins on top.  I've recently rediscovered this treat; unfortunately, calories are an issue for me, so rediscovering their deliciousness has not been such a good thing. :P

If you're up for some easy baking:
Homemade flapjacks with fruit & seeds
Banana nut bread

Apple slices and peanut butter are a good protein + sugar boost.  Holland & Barrett do good fruit/seed/nut mixes that are an easy grab.
