I'll register but have to do some non-partisan research on who I'll vote for :)

Go to the news section in the thread for "Overseas Voters Register......"  I believe there's a sh*tload of stuff there that's helpful.  If you haven't don't so I would strongly advise you to do it now.  I did mine in February and took about three months to get the "official postcard back" from the voting district where I am registered.

I'll take this opportunity to spread the word that F9/11 can be downloaded for free if anyone has the mind to. This is but one place to do it: http://www.download.com/Fahrenheit-9-11-Trailer/3000-2171-10294086.html

I take it that if I registered earlier in the year, then I don't have to re-register for November's elections?

well I dont know what you did earlier in the year Regina so I cant say personally. I do know that there is a total difference between being a registered voter and requesting an absentee ballot. Most of is are probably registered voters (I registered in 2000) but those of us living abroad who want to vote and wont be in the US on election day have to send in a postal absentee ballot application form to our local electoral office in the county of state where we were last resident in. They'll then send you the ballot so you can vote and you send it back when youre done. Everyone has to ask for a new absentee ballot every year. Hope that helps.

BTW, Ive sent in my application and I cant wait to vote!! I had every intention of doing so but after watching Moore's film I felt inspired!

What I shoud've said was, earlier in the year I requested an absentee ballot. I meant this to be for the November election, however I got an absentee ballot for the Primaries instead (which I sent off anyway). Will I still get a ballot for November or do I need to request one again? In other words, each time I want to vote, do I have to request a ballot?

It depends on HOW you registered for absentee ballots...I am registered to recieve ALL election ballots for my district, so I get everything from School levies to Presidential.  For me, this is a fixed plan until A) I call to cancel or B) I go and vote in person.

However, depending on what you asked for when you asked to be an absentee voter, they may have you down for the "next ballot" and not subsequent ones.  Your county auditor should know...and you can probably check on your county webpage to find an email address to make a querrie about it...

An excellent guide to absentee voting and how to do it (from the expats against bush site) can be found by clicking here.

I registered earlier in the year and received my ballot for the primaries.  Just received my ballot for the "local" elections for my last US address, so I assume I'll also automatically receive the presidential ballot as well.

Then again, in politics one can NEVER assume... ::)

For the first time ever, I sent off for an absentee voting thing, but frankly, I don't think I'll do it.  I don't have an adress there and there doesn't seem to be any option not to have one.  Been gone too long I guess.   ::)

Thanks, that was really helpful!  ;D   According to the information there I should request a ballot each time I want to vote. I'll be sure to do that this week!

My postcard said that I would only receive a federal ballot - should I be qualified to vote in local elections too? Not that I really care - I haven't paid any attention to California or Santa Cruz county politics, but I did think it was curious that I apparently can't....
