Taxes...
« on: July 14, 2009, 11:05:43 AM »
I just finished doing my taxes, but can I do direct deposit since I'm in England?   Or do I have to receive a check?  If I can do direct deposit, do I just fill it out with my English Bank details?

I got an extension on my taxes, so haven't actually done it yet, but my impression was that you would still be able to direct deposit into a US bank account, but I am not sure about a UK account.  I don't think you would be able to.

You can contact the IRS at the US Embassy in London by calling: 020 7894 0477 (which never worked for me) or e-mailing them at: irs.london@irs.gov (they got back to me within about a week when I was asking about extensions)

If you find the answer to your question, I would love to know as well, so can you please post it on here?

i emailed the embassy they said it can be deposited into an american account, but not a uk account, so you have to request a check.

I filed US taxes this year (I'm a UK citizen, but I lived and worked in the US last year) and chose to have the refund direct deposited into my US account. I thought about getting them to send it to the UK as a cheque but I didn't want to deal with the hassle and cost of getting it cashed in the UK (would have cost about £10 to deposit it into my UK account and up to 28 days for it to clear!). By getting it paid into my US account I have some money available there for the next time I visit the US; or if I need to access it here I can always transfer it over to my UK account via Paypal or similar.
