I'm so scared. I did a lot more reading and watched a video online that has made me terrified of it all. I guess it depends on the person. I had a rhinoplasty a few years ago and flew through it like a breeze. No pain no swelling and no complications.

Just watching that video and hearing how people bleed and can bleed to death has left me debating if it's worth it. I just get these infections so often and even have problems with tonsil stones YUCK.

Sigh. We shall see what GP says tomorrow. You would think that after all these years they would have developed some new way to do this was less pain and less healing time.

The bleeding to death would be only in exceedingly rare cases.  a tablespoon or two of blood is normal for most who have the proceedure.  You also have to consider the fact that it's going to be "positive pain" ie, something good will result from it.  What's a few weeks of ice cream and tears if you never have to suffer another tonsil infection?

What is the bleeding like? Is it like a faucet or is it like a small cut? Also do you remember the scabs falling off or anything? That really scares me lol.

I dont remember scabs, but the bleeding is sort of like feeling a trickle in your throat, and when you go to instinctively cough it up it's blood instead of mucus.  It's not ALOT of blood, and as I recall it does stop rather quickly.

Yeah I see the positive pain point. I'm a big old wuss when it comes to medical pain, yet I have about 7 tattoos. Really the pain and the blood and the scabs are frightening and grossing me out the most.

I had Pleurisy a few years ago and that was probably the worst pain I've ever been in. Worse then childbirth worse then breaking my leg.

Oh good, a reference point: I found my tattoo to be more painful than what I can recall of getting my tonsils removed.

I suffer from 2 or 3 cases of strep per year, and all growing up and into adulthood I've always likened the pain to that of getting my tonsils removed.  It's like a friendly reminder of the experience every so often. ^_^

Strep is different from tonsillitis.  Tonsilitis is a condition in which the tonsils become inflammed. As the tonsils are apart of our immune system to help fight infections, they are prone to being attacked by any number of bacterial or viral infections. Strep throat is a sore throat condition caused by the streptococcus bacteria.  While the strep bacteria CAN be the cause of tonsillitis, it isn't the sole culprit. The most common tonsil infection is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.

Well as has been pointed out somewhere in this thread.... aye  im too lazy to go find it  :)     That the Epstein Barr virus can be responsible for tonsilitis and is also a cause for Mononucleosis.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

GP saw me today and told me that he has to personally see me have Tonsillitis at least 3 more times in a year to consider sending me to an ENT.

We were told the same thing for my 6 year old son and said he would also have to be put on medication those four times as well before getting referred.  :-\\\\

Total coincidence, but my hubby was at the dental clinic yesterday (for wisdom teeth) and they *STRONGLY* recommended he see his GP to get a referral to get his tonsils out!  Apparently they're absolutely massive and likely to cause problems.  But he's only had 1 infection since I've known him and he doesn't seem bothered...especially after I showed him this thread talking about 4 week recovery times!!  What's the worst that can happen if he keeps them in - possibly more infections, but is that it?

Aless --

Some people who have chronically enlarged tonsils also tend to have enlarged adenoids which is present in a lot of cases of Sleep Apnea which can be deadly. He may want to take their advice and at least have his GP check him out.
