How big is your to-read shelf?
« on: July 19, 2009, 10:00:52 PM »
I've seen this topic on many forums, possibly even this one. Sorry if it's a repeat.  Not all readers do this sort of behaviour, but those of us who do can sometimes compile an impressive list of to-read and currently reading. What's yours like currently?

For me, I have the following on the more immediate to-read shelf (not the hypothetical 'someday read if I get the chance', the 'I picked that up in the book shop and I'm saving it for a later trip, or even the 'I am actively seeking a copy of this book).  I physically have these books (or are borrowing them) and want to read them or I am currently reading them:

1)Decline and Fall-reading this one.  Took a while to get into, but I am enjoying this one.
2)Half-assed-Jeanette Fulda.  I have been waiting to read this, so when a fellow UK-Yankee lent to this to me, I started it (thanks, Karrit).
3)How Not to Write a Novel- Sandra Newman & Howard Mittlemark-reading this one too
4)Also reading-The Self-sufficientish Bible
Now we get into the TBR:
5)London-the Biography
6)South of the River-Blake Morrison
7)Eat Pray Love-Elizabeth Gilbert
8)Thousand Splendid Suns-Khaled Hosseini  I meant to read this a while ago.
9)Bloody Foreigners (a birthday present)
10)A Jeeves and Wooster compliation
11)Jane Eyre-Which I have downloaded to read

Plus I have 3 books I won for writing reviews to read (all of them look pretty good).  I used to read a lot faster than I do now, plus we got a new TV, so I am actually watching more TV/films and playing more games than I used to do.

So, I am interested to find out if my shelf is the longest

Mount TBR is massive, I'm afraid. I have all my books indexed on LibraryThing and the ones I have yet to read are tagged 'to read.' Yes, I'm a bit obsessive. Anyway, at last count my TBR pile numbered 571.  :-\\\\

I'm a 'buy and read' kinda gal, but my husband's TBR pile is also massive. He has shelves at his parent's house full of books that still need read and we have a shelf of our own. He has an addiction subscription to the Folio Society. Sadly for him, I'm actually reading books from his TBR pile! I wish he'd hurry up and read Brideshead Revisited so we could talk about it.....

Lucky boy! My mother used to subscribe, and I have a lot of her old Folio books. They're gorgeous. I've picked up a few (OK, a few dozen) on Amazon Marketplace for decent prices over the years.

I bought some books on my recent trip back to the US, and here is what I've got in the wings for reading:

Walden and Other Writings
Water For Elephants
The Secret Lives of Bees
As I Lay Dying
My Lobotomy
The Mist-Filled Path
Yearning for the Wind

For storage and budget reasons, I am a library devotee, and I try to only take out 3 novels at a time, so that I have a realistic chance of returning them within their due date. Currently I have The Time Traveler's Wife and The Shipping News out as well as some travel guides for upcoming trips.

I do a combination of requesting books that I want to read (sometimes getting suggestions from the 'What are you reading?' thread) and just browsing the shelves.

I do have about 10 books on my shelf that I need to read, which are mostly things that people have bought me, left behind when they've visited, or short stories compilations that I haven't finished. Just the other day I made a list of these so that I would actually read them and then decide which ones I want to donate so that I can make some space on the shelves.

Probably three or four six-shelf bookcases.

My Lobotomy

I loved the radio story about that case.

My Lobotomy

You're the second person to mention this book to me in the past 48 hours. Is that a sign I should buy it? Even if it means adding another book to the TBR pile??  :P

I am thinking about doing Library Thing with our books!  :)  I need to get them organised instead of willy-nilly all over the place, but anything that OCD kind of scares me a bit too...being sucked in...  :P
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

Go on. Embrace your inner obsessive. You'll like it.  ;)

Seriously though - LT is great because you don't have to index all your books. You could just do one shelf or one bookcase. Then if you like it, do more. If your books are mostly modern (i.e., post late '60s or early '70s), then all you have to do is plug in the SBN or ISBN number and the rest pops up magically. Most of my books are a lot older than that, though, so I had to do manual entry in most cases.

There's more than just indexing too! There are great forums designed to appeal to anything you like to read! You could join the poetry group and the Yorkshire group! (I don't actually know if there's a Yorkshire group, but I wouldn't be surprised!).

Isn't LT limited unless you upgrade?  That's why I haven't bothered with it because things like Bookarmy and weRead are unlimited from what I can see.

Easy now. There is nothing wrong with a bit of OCD!  ;)

I honestly don't know.  I worked at Borders for a year and-a-half, and between my discount, house account and monthly book allowance I was a book buying machine.  I'm guessing I've only read half of what I bought, and they're scattered throughout my bookshelves.  Best guess is 50-60.
