social security card name change
« on: July 17, 2004, 10:06:35 AM »
hi all! i know this isn't exactly about visas, but anyone have any experiences with changing the name for your s.s. card? you use the overseas form right? do you have to go to the embassy? can you mail it in? goodness me, they require a lot of documentation of the name change, but this is one of the first things you have to change so that you can change other things. my marriage certificate doesn't have a place for my maiden and married names, so i'm in trouble already! anyone go through this process and want to pass their experience my way? thank you thank you!
if it isn't one thing, its my mother . . .

I went to the Embassy in London to amend my passport to my married name.  Didn't realise they has a SS office there but when I did, I went down with my amended passport and filled out the form and changed it right then and there.  About a week or so later I got my new SS card.

I would say if you are unable to make it to the Embassy in person, simply contact them and ask which form and then post it in.  It's a pretty simply process so can't imagine it would be any more complex if one has to use the post.

Best of luck!

I've been inspired by this thread...I'm finally getting my name changed on my SS card.  ;D

One problem...I can't find an address to send the form to the embassy...is it just the regular Grosvenor Square address?  I couldn't find anything specifically for SS issues....  :-\\\\

I think you can send the application form to the SSA in the US - just put your UK address down for the addy you want the card to go to.

Personally I went down to the American Citizen Services at the Embassy one day to take care of both my SSN (name change) and Martin's (duplicate card). I surprised the woman who took care of us by arriving with all our froms filled out and all our documents clipped to each form. We were in and out having done two applications, in about 5 minutes. Couldnt have been easier.
