Cheap glasses?
« on: October 03, 2009, 11:34:39 AM »
I have been needing some new glasses for a while and finally ordered a nice pair to be delivered to the states at Christmas. Now my current glasses snapped in half and hubby got a big smear of super glue on the lense trying to fix them. Is there a place to get cheap glasses in the UK. I don't care what they look like (I'd only be wearing them at home until DEC). I know in the states you can get some at the lions club or at zennioptical.com

Any recommendations appreciated.

I had a great local optician, but he just went out of business. If you've got a prescription less than two years old, you might find a small shop in your area that is a good deal.

"Specsavers" are constantly advertising cheap prices but I can't personally vouch; just to say that there are chain stores that at least claim to have low prices on glasses and contacts.

I get glasses from Specsavers as does BF.  They are good.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I priced things online and found that  https://www.glassesuk.co.uk gave the best deals with the fastest and cheapest shipping.

I decided to call Specsavers and ask how long it would take, they said they had my lenses in stock and I could get them today. I found two pairs for 25 pounds online that I liked and made my way to the store. Well the store had around 1/4 of the stock they had online. I was really bummed. All the glasses they had for 25 pounds were very old lady styled and even then there were only about 5 types to chose from (online they had 2 full pages).  A very nice lady called up 3 stores in my area to see if she could find anyone with better stock, that turned up empty, so she then suggested we look through the discontinued stock they had in the back. I found a nice pair in that pile an they were ready in less than an hour. So overall I was really happy with specsavers.

My suggestion, in the future, is to order online for the cheapest and most variety. But  if you need your glasses in a hurry (like me) call your local specsavers to see what they have in stock before you go in and find a nice sales person to let you dig through there discontinued stock in the back if you still can't find what you are looking for.

I came in here to recommend them, too! The pair on my face were £22 total and my prescription sunglasses were £50. They've got a virtual mirror thing where you can try on different pairs onto a photo of your face, which really helps, too. It sounds hokey but you can really see immediately which shapes DON'T work for you...

I'm in the same boat.
I can order online but the thing that has stopped me is getting the measurement for the center of my eye. It is difficult to measure on my own.

How did you chaps do it?

If you use www.glassesdirect.co.uk, just make sure you find out your pupillary distance and enter it into the order form. I ordered glasses from them a couple of years ago but thought it would be okay that I didn't know my PD (they said that many people have a standard PD). Unfortunately, the glasses were not suitable and I got a headache and went dizzy wearing them because the measurements for the PD were not right for me so I had to send them back  :(.

Costco Queen here...Costco has a great opticians service. Also, some local opticians probably have good prices. Lucky for me my Mom is in the business so when I go home I get some great frames from her for super cheap (okay free) but IMO costco is a really afforable option if you can do it.

I was told to ask my optician to measure the PD when they next tested my eyes. In the end, I just went with a test and glasses from Specsavers, so I still don't know what my PD is  ::).

I got mine done without asking, so that was not a problem for me when I ordered online.  My glasses were perfect (Both times) and cheap :D

Thanks for the recommendation! I've been putting off buying prescription sunglasses because I'm a cheapskate, but if I can get them for £50 or less I'll be happy!  8) ;D

Cool!  Glad I could help!  FYI, these are the glasses I bought in black and red

The virtual mirror squirrellypoo mentioned works really well!  Oh and I didn't pay the full price for the ones I bought.  I found money off vouchers on-line each time.  I think I spent maybe £25 for each including shipping, tops.
