Kindle coming to the UK!
« on: October 07, 2009, 05:58:25 PM »
http://blogkindle.com/2009/10/international-release-of-kindle-2/

The above shows the new coverage and availability. The International version will be available for $279 on Oct. 19th. There is a $2-per-book surcharge to download outside either the US or the home country I am not sure. Not alot of details on that unfortunately. :(

I already have the Sony Reader and I absolutely love it but I am soooo tempted! I've started out just using my ereader when I'm travelling but I'm so used to it now, I pretty much use it even at home now assuming the book's available in the ebook format. Although obviously that is not the universal preference.

I am an avid device reader and it's my preferred method.  Can't quite get e-ink because I'm in love with back-lit screens as I mostly read in bed, at night and prefer not to use a light.

I am all for bringing all mainstream books to digital devices.  Can't do it soon enough for me.

I got the PRC-700 specifically because it came with a backlight (actually, sidelight) because one of the main problem (aside from travelling) that the reader was meant to resolve was reading in bed next to a sleeping spouse. The quality did suffer for the addition, but not enough for me to offset the benefit. Though considering that Sony doesn't make the lit version anymore, I'm guessing that might not have been the case for most people. :(

I'm reading off an iPhone and before that an iPaq.  I can think of nothing more relaxing that being snuggled deep in the covers, lights off, house silent and reading.  Well, house silent as possible in between the hubby's snores.  ::)

I never thought I could get into e-reading as I actually dislike reading long passages on a computer screen, and never followed through with reading anything lengthy on my Blackberry.  We got a book "game" for the DS and I have found it easy to get used to, and I am considering Kindle or the other readers (especially more normal page sized readers).

Nothing will take the place of print books for me, but I like the idea of saving a few trees.

I love the idea of a Kindle for traveling purposes, as I read really fast and tend to need to bring loooads of books if I'm going to be making long journeys (like, 9 hours on a plane to the UK!) what I don't like about the Kindle (or any other ereader) is how wishy washy they are about whether you actually "own" the digital books that you buy.

It will never replace real books for me that's for sure.

You can just safely assume that you do not own those books the same way you own, say, a couch and work from there to decide if you're comfortable enough to buy a Kindle.

For better or worse, usage licensing is probably how digital media is gonna be sold going forward.

How fab is this news! I have been wanting an ereader since they were just an idea. I'm waiting for the prices to come down just a bit more but I think it would be such a fabulous investment for me because I read a lot. Jon is getting really pissed at me for how many books I buy a week.

It will gladly replace my books except those which I keep for sentimental reasons. If I like a book enough then I'll probably go and buy the hard copy but otherwise I read so many (most crap trashy novels at the moment) that I read them and would be happy enough just to throw them out.

It is safe to assume you don't actually "own" them. There was an uproar a little while ago about the book 1984 being removed from people's Kindles after they had purchased it due to licensing issues.

I am also an avid reader and buy way too many books. I don't know if it would save much money, but it would save a lot of space, especially traveling. I end up bringing at least 4 books when I travel and usually have to end up buying more. And yes, my books have put me over the baggage limit at times, and not by 1 or 2 pounds.  :-[

Pretty much word-for-word my reasons for getting an electronic reader.

Yeah, I think I want this.  Especially for any flights. I have the book thing for the DS, which isn't bad by any means, but I would like a bigger screen.

Does the backlight hurt your eyes? This is the reason I don't use things like my iphone or DS, I don't want it to affect my eyes. I think the e-ink they have on these books is awesome.

I know alot of people that love their e-readers and Kindles. I know my publishers push ebooks quite a bit as it is easier to get it to more people and the costs are much lower.  For myself I still love the feel of holding a book to read.

Me too. I've played with e-readers and I can't stand them. Nothing can replace the feel, look or smell of a book. "From my cold dead hands," I say!  :P ;D

See, my problem is that I have bad hands. I get RSI like symptoms and the way I hold books always flairs it up. And since I read a good 2 books a week, it causes me pain.

Plus, I don't have any more space in my house. Jon is pretty pissed off about it.
