Rights to test results?
« on: October 08, 2009, 12:42:22 PM »
Hi,

I have a medical condition, and I normally keep a record of all blood results (I've had something of the order of 20+ test in the last year). In the US I know all I have to do is ask for the results and they are given, sometimes with a .10-.25 charge for the paper/ink. What are the rules concerning blood tests in the UK? I asked for results yesterday, but was ignored. I really like having a complete file, to note trends in levels etc.

Thanks,
Brandi

You're definitely entitled to your test results, though they may not give them over the phone if they can't confirm your identity. Is this at the GP's or at the hospital? I've had probably close to a thousand blood tests gone in the past year (no exaggeration) and I've never had z problem getting any of the results. The hospital computers even have a "trend view" that will show you the last ten or so counts in an easy chart so you can see if things are going up or down.

It's at the GP! Do you think if I walked in they'd give them if I walked in? Or should I make another appt?

And, I'm sorry you've had so many blood tests :( I've finally gotten used to them, but it doesn't make it any better.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I too like to keep a trend on any bloodwork that I may have done. I usually just go to my GP tell the secretary that I'd like a copy of my bloodwork from (whatever date) please. They usually check with the GP and give me my copy. THey know me fairly well at the GP surgery as Im there every 8 weeks for my B12 injection :)

Ha! That is exactly why I have so many blood draws. However, my GP refuses to believe I have a b12 deficiency. But that's another story for another day..

Thanks everyone! (and balmerhon - why didn't I even consider checking the nhs website?! You'd think I would..)
