A Texas Kitty's Misadventure in London
« on: October 10, 2009, 01:10:30 AM »
I was a frequent visitor of this board last year when we were preparing to move our two cats to the UK.

Unfortunately, Charlotte, my lovely Siamese, had a bad accident yesterday after suffering a fall from a second floor window. I spent a very long night preparing for the bad news that she wasn't going to make it. Charlotte has pulled through. You can read the long story here:
http://goodcharlottesometimes.blogspot.com/

Unfortunately, we didn't think pet insurance was important, as we have indoor only kitties. Obviously, accidents do happen and with our mounting vet bills reaching over £1300, I've decided to sell a few of my photographs on Etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=8227866 to help cover some costs. Please take a look at let me know if there is anything you like.

Awwww...poor Charlotte! Keep us apprised of how she's doing, won't you? My cat's name is Charlotte (tho' she's no siamese). Against all entreaty, she's gone out into the rain tonight to...cat around, or whatever they do abroad on wild October nights.

Lovely photos.

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Charlotte - we're pretty broke at the moment, but are sending loads of love and cuddles and good wishes and healing vibes in her direction.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Love and cuddles are just as important.
I will definitely keep updates coming on Charlotte. At the moment, we have high hopes she will make a full and complete recovery.

Just a heads up to anyone who finds themselves in this position, there is always http://www.bluecross.org.uk/web/site/home/home.asp

Their London Animal hospital is in Victoria and the staff are out of this world....I can't praise them enough.  There is also PDSA and Celia Hammond Trust.

Glad the kitty is doing well.

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty, but relieved to know that she's going to be ok!

Your pictures are gorgeous. The "Save Charlotte" is just a watermark for the digital images, right?

Many of these charities will also help with vet bills. However, apparently you need to already be on benefits to be eligible for this help.

Thanks Cellar Door. Yes, the "Save Charlotte" is just a watermark. All photos are printed by the breathtaking print shop: ThePrintSpace.co.uk
Oh, and I've always been curious. "Cellar Door" must be a Donnie Darko reference?

Update:
Charlotte has been home for a bit over a week now. Reintroducing her to our other cat proved more difficult than we could have imagined. The rejection put her in depression for a few days, and she's only just beginning to come out of it.
Her eye is almost completely clear, and are relieved to find she still retains some (if not all) vision in it. Just one last surgery to remove the wires from her jaw and nose.

This breaks my heart... poor, poor kitty. I'm so sorry she had to go through that.

Big Donnie Darko fan, but I can't remember if the phrase is referenced in the movie or not. It's actually taken from J.R.R. Tolkien, who said that "cellar door" is an exceptionally beautiful phrase. I read that once, as a kid, and it just kind of stuck.

I'm sorry to hear about Charlotte.  :( Glad she is pulling through, though.

Your photographs are lovely! Even though I can't afford to buy anything since we are going to the states soon, I have to honestly say that I think you are selling them at too low a price. I used to sell my photographs at a Starbucks in Dallas, and I charged up to $250 for a digital print (Iris prints, though, which are expensive) and about the same for handmade silver prints from the darkroom, more if they were alternative process photographs, like cyanotype, gum bichromate, palladium, etc. (they were always matted and framed, however). I have found that my work sold better at a higher price than a lower one, simply because people generally expect to pay a bit more for good artistic photographs and are sometimes dubious to buy artwork that is listed at a low price. Though, to be fair, I haven't ever sold anything on Etsy, and I am sure competition may be stiff, but I think its worth a try. I'd go up to $75 at least, and as high as $100 for larger prints. Just my two pence.  ;) The cemetery photograph is stunning.

Don't raise the prices yet! My husband and I just picked one out.  ;)

Ah right. The same things is said in Donnie Darko. I bet they mention they are quoting Tolkien (it's in a classroom scene).

Wow Jewlz, I think I had read you were into photography, but had no idea how much so. I think we must have an incredible amount in common both being Dallas girls as well.
I took a film photography class at Richland a long time ago, and absolutely loved the process of doing my own enlargements. Do you have a link to any of your work? I would love to see some of your images.

Thanks for the advice about sales. I'm in the process of getting things to cut my own mats, and possibly framing. I agree about raising the prices, so will probably do that after matting. But don't worry Cellar Door, you can get the "Uk Yankee rate" ;).

When did you take the class at Richland? I love Wayne and Roy! I got my associate's degree in photographic imaging there, then went on to Texas A & M - Commerce and did a bachelors in photography and English, then on to UTD and did a masters in Art & Technology with an emphasis on digital photography and photo theory. I used to have a website up, but its expired now. I gave most of my matted prints away to friends and family, too, and have yet to bring all my negatives across. I really should at least have a Flickr or something, I guess! I don't shoot much anymore, sadly, I guess because I prefer hand printing so much more than digital. I have a hard time not just pointing and shooting with my D-SLR, whereas with my old school film cameras I took my time and wielded more control, and took much better photographs. Oh well! Anyway, if you are on FB, you should send me your details in a PM so we can chat there!  ;D

I wasn't on benefits, didn't have insurance and would have cost me close to £3,000.  I must have got lucky with then and paid a fraction of the price.  Also planning a fund raiser next year and pet site I'm launching in January that I hope will raise money for shelters.

Update:
Charlotte is now home and doing really well. She had her last surgery a few days ago, and we can all get back in the regular groove of things.
Thanks for all the kind words of support.
