Low carb and South Beach in the UK?
« on: July 26, 2004, 02:20:45 PM »
Hi all,

I'm currently on the South Beach diet or something like that anyways.  :) Just when I'm leaving the US seems like the whole country has gone low carb crazy. In every grocery store, you're overwhelmed with low carb syrup, cookies, chips, sauces even tortillas! I'm wondering how hard it's going to be finding low carb products in the UK. Last time I was there I didn't see anything. What I'm most worried about is my Crystal Light! I don't want to see my progress go down the drain by having to drink regular sodas.  :( Any one know where I can find low carb products in the UK? By the way, has anyone found it being difficult to be on a low carb diet in the UK with all those yummy, scrumptious desserts?

It's just starting to come here.  Most things are hard to find but I know there are websites you can order from.  There is a thread started by Pebbles with at least one site on it and I think Broxi also know a site.  I am finding it very easy, just eating low carb stuff on my own.  I don't drink crystal light, so I'm not sure it is here, but then I am a huge H2O drinker and gave up soda as it is anyway last year.  As for the dessert,  reserve one night a week to have them, and as I do, the three spoonfuls or forkful rule and that's it.  Either have your partner or a friend help with the rest or toss it.

Can't get Crystal Lite here. As for desserts - I make some really really yummy low-carb ones (like coconut mousse and creme brulee, or just plain old strawberries and cream!) - if I cheat I cheat hard so I avoid it at all costs. I find low-carbing here easy because I don't (and never did) rely on "specialty" products - I just eat normal whole foods like meats, cheeses (oh the cheese here!), berries and yogurts etc... you can find Atkins bars in Boots & Holland and Barretts for those chocolate cravings, and plenda is readily available here. :)

Guess I will be adding Chrysal Light to my supply of foods to bring with me in Sept. But, Splenda is available? If so, I can take that off!

I'm sort of doing South Beach myself. Just started a five days ago and it hasn't been hard at all being able to eat the veggies etc. I started it not planning on continuing after the first two weeks.  I told myself I would make that decision when the time comes, but I am thinking that I will for the most part. For me, it was more to see if I could follow through with it, because crackers and pretzels are my downfall and I wanted to gain some control over them as I have been eating for emotional reasons lately. So far I have been quite successful. (I did eat two multi-grain triscuits yesterday at a party. That has been my only "treat." I made the decision to eat them...and there were so many other temptations, but I thought about what I really wanted out of them and I picked two crackers piled with a crab dip!

Yes, there's plenty of Splenda around--and they sell it in big jars.   However, liquid Splenda is not available.

Does anyone have any good low-carb recipes or good websites with lowcarb info?

Hey, we have something the USA doesn't have...........Splenda in tablets. My family took mine when I was at home for a visit in June!

*slight hijack here* comment was made about US having so many low-carb products, etc..........I came to the conclusion when I was at home last that if they took the low-carb commercials off the air (and the drug company ads), there would be hardly any commercials!!! *end of hijack*

Texasgal. I have been doing low carbs for awhile here in the UK. We dont have Crystal lite here in fact I dont think i have ever seen powdered soft drinks here at all come to think of it. But we do have whats called "squash" which you can get with no added sugar. Its just a concentrate fruit drink that you mix with water. Its dirt cheap for store brands but Robinsons is the best. I drink that, water and diet pop on my low carb diet. Last weekend I ordered some stuff from lowcarbmegastore.com. I never bought low carb items from the net before but Ill let you know how it turns out. I bought pancake mix, chocolate, biscottis and so on. Wish the stores here catered to low carbers as they do in the USA. I havent been back to the USA in ages. Is it true that McDonalds has started a low carb menu?

Pebbles, I have seen some low carb stuff at Woolworths and superdrug.  The low carb rolos and kit kats are a fortune! (Thanks Mindy for helping me find them!!!!)  They have choc. bars at superdrug that were on sale for a £1 each last I checked.  I think that is about what they are in the US!  McDonalds, really!?  Well, what about the salads there now, they seem low-carb.  Oh I just remembered, at Boots they have a low carb salad in the prepared food section.  So it's coming along here, much slower, but it is.
