But would they want to buy it if it weren't offered to them?

Hard to say but that is business. It's import/exports, kinda makes the world go round.

How many people moan about American crap while eating a McD burger or shopping at Toys-r-Us and the like. I have never met one person here that likes McDonald's yet just look at any golden arches here and they are maxed out. People here and other parts of the world like to moan about the US influence but they must like it otherwise it wouldn't survive. The number of my work colleagues who b*tch and moan about US things and then in the next breath tell me about their holidays to Orlando.

Do I like all the American influences? Not particularly but its about choices.
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Also, the happy Halloweens I remember were in the '70s when every single child in the neighbourhood went out trick or treating. Every single one. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I had even one child come to the door in the US when I lived there. Probably 1980-something. I'm sure it's still something children get involved in at school (dressing up, etc.), but in my experience it's not celebrated in the US nearly to the extent it was 30 years ago.
That is a good point. It seems to me that in the US it's all about who can put up the most decorations in their yard and less and less about kids going trick or treating. I get only maybe 5 kids max per year. And the costumes are all store-bought stuff. In my day we had a lot of fun deciding what to "be" and then scrounging around trying to find old clothes and stuff at home that we could wear. I remember one year I was a gypsy and another time my friend and I were pioneers (Little House series inspired)
But I agree I don't like to see people in the UK adopting the junky stuff from the US -- they should go back to their roots for Halloween.

I'd like details on the execution of the jellyfish costume because it sounds fab!

I like Halloween.  We had a wonderful neighborhood for trick-or-treating in the US before we moved over four years ago.  All the children participated and it was really fun.

When we moved to the UK it was clear that trick-or-treating was not done much in our small town.  We decided to be the trick-or-treat house.  We don't do much decorating, but we have tons of candy and we do games in the garden for the neighborhood children.  Lots of kids come and they're well behaved.  Quite a few parents have thanked us for doing it.

I think this will be us in the future.  Of course, 2/3 of the village are my hubby's family and friends, and they're all excited about Americanizing the place!  Thanksgiving is gonna be loads of fun!!

I too am a Halloween freak!! This will be my 3rd Halloween here in the UK...I have decorated the inside and outside of our home every year. My neighbors think I'm mad. We also have a Halloween party as well, and costumes are mandatory! We incorporate fireworks at the end of the evening for Bon Fire night - we combine the 2 holidays.

One of our neighbors carves 'a' pumpkin and sets it outside, but that's about it.

As for Trick or Treaters... I always have a bowl of candy just in case, but I have yet to see any!

Hope you all have a fantastic Halloween!

Oh, good call on combining Halloween and Bonfire Night!  Unfortunately I'm moving one week before Halloween.  We still don't have furniture in our new house yet (hubs wanted to wait until I got there) so I doubt a party will be happening this year.  But next year we're definitely having a costume party.

Are there any laws regarding fireworks?

There must be some but every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to have them. And they all seem to set them off a week before and a week after and always about 2AM.
But I sleep like a log.

You can buy them at Tesco etc. Not like the US which, I recall, had individual stands located by themselves.

Depending on the state... NY is no fireworks, except for July 4th.  And you can't buy them anywhere.  I think Pennsylvania was the closest state if you want to buy fireworks.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to talk hubs into fireworks.  He was pretty anti-fireworks when I brought it up for our wedding.  But a girl can always try... :)

I'm going to use a clear umbrella, the kind with the white strip at the end and that you buy from street vendors. I'm going to tape bubble wrap on the inside to give it some texture and then tape strips of large and small bubble bubble wrap from the sides and some from the inside. I also have strips of iridescent sequins and to give it some colour. Then I'm going to put glow sticks on the inside to give it a glow. I'll wear white clothing.

I'll post a photo when I'm done. I'm quite excited about it. Although my mates in the UK seem to think that a Halloween costume has to be scary and I'm trying to teach them otherwise.
