Need a new kitchen!!
« on: November 03, 2009, 05:48:28 PM »
I'm hoping that this is the right place for this but...

I'm desperate for a new kitchen. I don't know how my hubby has lived with it for so long (he's owned the house for 9 years!). No cupboards, barely any surfaces to prepare anything. Just some metal shelving, for stuff. Yikes! :P

So I'm asking if anyone has any recommendations. We are in East London. I've looked at B&Q but nothing has completely taken my breath away. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks
Lisa

IKEA! My hubby is addicted to their kitchen planner.  A coworker of mine had an IKEA kitchen out in a couple summers ago and is very happy with it.

We used Magnet when we re-did our kitchen (in our old house) and it was GORGEOUS!!!  I don't miss that house, but I do miss the kitchen!  They work with you to design it (You need to bring measurements) They also threw in all out appliances free.  They have different deals all the time.

I spent a years salary when I redid my kitchen about 3 years ago, I used a local firm, its beautiful and the quality is fantastic, but if I had to do it over again, I would absolutely buy an Ikea Kitchen!

Another vote for IKEA! Their selection is gorgeous and incredibly affordable, plus you have the option to install it yourself or pay someone to do it. They're my first choice when we (eventually, one of these days) move into our new place.

Thanks everyone. I've sent away for the Magnet brochure. Unfortunately, I think it would take an act of Parliament to get my husband into an IKEA, I'll have to work on that one :D.

Another vote for Magnet! We just had ours fitted and it's gorgeous!! We didn't need to give them measurements - they sent a nice man out to do it all. And yes - free (or near free) appliances! Magnet rules!

(I'm with your husband on IKEA, I'm afraid.)  :-\\\\

Ha ha - you sound like my wife, she was complaining about the kitchen since moving in. Cupboard doors not closing properly etc.

Anyway - we had ours done by B&Q and it's great!

Got ours from HomeBase last year with lots of deals going on got over £1000 knocked off the product prices (cabinets, appliances, etc) and they had half price installation at the time.  Worked a long time with us on the design and managed to turn a horrible galley kitchen into a very spacious work area, tons of cabinet space and counter top.  Even helped us hide our ugly boiler and installed new gas lines and electric sockets.  After care has been great as well.

When I had my kitchen done (when I was on maternity leave) I had seven quotes, most of these places have quite similar prices, I went with a local company as I am keen to support local businesses, their prices were very similar to Magnet and other "high street" shops.

My ex, who was a kitchen fitter, says:

Magnet is good but very expensive.

B&Q are cheap, sturdy and an utter b*tch to put together (if you're trying to do it yourself).

IKEA range from cheap to middle of the range, has a good selection, but the units you want are often out of stock.

Wickes do a good range, but he has no experience of them.

MFI have gone into Administration.

We had Wickes come out and measure, etc. when we were having our kitchen fitted recently. And I went to the shop, looked at what they had to offer, and met with their kitchen pro. However, the quality of their stuff was pretty inferior compared to what I'd seen at Magnet. And, given that Magnet was throwing in all sorts of appliances (that we'd have had to buy anyway), Wickes came out to be more expensive. That was a surprise to me as I'd assumed they were less pricey.

my friend has a WICKES kitchen, and its lovely. They provide a full project management service, however, their project managers are based in Spain (????) so it was tricky to get answers from them.

I am slightly obsessed with kitchens, can you tell?

The Wickes near us has just been refurbished and we went in to have a nose around as we're doing up the bathroom.

Couldn't help but have a drool over their kitchens. They're very nice!

I have an MFI kitchen, which is about 10 years old. It's still in good shape, but I really really really really wish I'd had a full size larder unit put in instead of a glass fronted display. All of our dry goods are in a single base unit and I was cleaning out the other day and found a tin of Libby's pumpkin which I didn't even know was there (so I made pumpkin cake :D ).

I think my husband would shoot me dead if I told him I wanted a new kitchen, too  :-X
