Question - Do any of you have US ESPN? We're moving in 4-6 months and I swore to DH that I would make sure we had US ESPN so he could watch american football, baseball, etc. I understand it's more costly but am willing to pay for it to keep DH happy.

Please let me know if you have it and if it's worth it. Thanks!

Can't get US ESPN as far as I am aware. There is, however, ESPN and ESPN America. ESPN is mainly UK sports, it was created when they picked up some English football rights. ESPN America show college football, baseball, ice hockey, NBA, as well as some ESPN programming such as Around The Horn and Pardon The Interruption.
Sky Sports have the rights to the NFL.

I love having Sky for the news and food channel, the kids channels are helpful (my DSS loves CBeebies) but other than that, we pretty much just watch the main channels since that's where all the good stuff is.  :)

I really couldn't do without Sky+, love it. I've had Sky since 1991, basically since I got my own place!

Before my ex moved in, she only had 4 channels (couldn't even get Channel 5), we soon figured we wouldn't spend weekends at hers!

now have a good 100+ channels of which we regularly watch about 10...

Same with Freeview DTT.  They're packing more and more channels in, but I doubt that most people ever watch more than a small percentage, depending upon their tastes.

The motto today seems to be "Never mind the quality, just look at the quantity."

But different people will watch differennt channels. There are many I never watch but I wouldn't advocate getting rid of them because some people will do.
If it wasn't for all the sports channels, for example, many people on this forum would be denied the ability to watch American sport.
Also, quite a few quality programmes have ended up on some of the lesser watched channels - The West Wing was shown on More4  at a regular time having been shunted around the schedule on Channel 4. The Wire was shown on FX.

Good Point.  We love Sky Arts but I doubt that that is watched by the majority of people that have it.
And then I loathe old reruns and never watch them but that doesn't mean I think those stations that carry them should be taken off the air.

There's catering for different tastes, but I still think there are a lot of superfluous channels and duplication.  The "+1" channels (broadcasting the same thing an hour later) seem to serve little real purpose, especially given that the shows and movies are repeated multiple times over the course of a few weeks anyway (and in many cases the same show is screened twice a day to begin with, sometimes even three times).

I make extensive use of the +1 channels! Often there is something on that I wish I had caught from the start, or is at the same time as another show I want to watch. Having the +1 option means I can start over or watch both programmes! Brilliant idea  ;D

We just got a TV for the first time in the 2 years I have lived here and we have 70 some odd channels on Freeview and 30 some odd radio stations.  So far, all we have watched is a movie (on the DVD player), BBC World News, and BBC 24 hour news.  I am not sure that the TV will catch on much in our house.  Although, DH said that he now feels more civilised because he can watch news live.  ;)
I am the architect of my destiny.

I suppose it depends upon whether you're a channel "surfer" or whether you look ahead and plan what to watch.  I can't even remember the last time I watched something as it was broadcast; I look at the listings and decide what to record the next day for viewing later (which also has the advantage of being able to skip over the commercials).

I find the +1 channels very useful if there's a clash....even with sky+ I will adjust some recordings to utilise the +1 channel.
And that is from planning my viewing, I try to ensure I don't have 2 things set up to record at the same time on a regular basis because it then can interfere with live sport that I wish to watch.
And the only live TV I tend to watch is news and sport.

We use the  +1 channels a lot.  For one thing there are five of us so that there are sometimes clashes of what we want to watch.  Plus it's useful for shows that are on when the 12 year old is still awake but I don't think they're appropriate for her to watch - we can then catch them an hour later after her bedtime.   We don't have a VCR so don't record anything.

I don't watch much live TV either, but when it comes to recording stuff the +1s are a godsend! I've often wondered why they never did that in the US (or maybe they do now). I record so much stuff that there are often clashes and if I didn't have the +1 option, I'd miss things.

I love television.

heehee

I've just been informed that NObody has a VCR anymore.  We don't Sky+ either.  We do however, have more than five channels.

I like the +1 channels too - I use them quite a lot if I turn on the TV halfway through a programme and want to catch up on the first half afterwards. Or when there are 2 episodes of a show on consecutively (such as Friends... which I'm watching on E4+1 right now as I just got home from work and so missed the E4 broadcast) - even if I tune in at the end of the first episode, I can still watch both programmes :).
