Television.... Only 5 channels
« on: November 06, 2009, 04:08:26 PM »
Hi there!

Anyone else out there dealing with just the 5 'terrestrial' channels on British TV. Not that I'm complaining, I was just wondering. No freeview box, no HD, just a plain TV with only the 5 channels...

And I'm not missing anything! :D

In the US, I had a satellite dish... and even with hundreds of channels available there were lots of times when there - was - nothing - on !!! Just channel surfing hoping to find something to watch!  Now with just 5 channels, we make a conscious decision about what to watch (and not to watch). And when there is nothing worth watching...

We turn it off!!! Such freedom!!!

Hubby and I dont have TV at all in our home, not even the 5 channels. We have A television, for DvD/blu ray and the xbox 360.

I do occationally miss documentary channels like discovery, nat geo, and the history channels, but easily living without.

We have oodles of channels and I love it!!  ;D

But seriously, you don't really need them, especially as so much stuff is online these days. There's BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 OD and ITV Player. And just yesterday I found out about this free online thing called TV Catchup which gives you tons of channels.

I like being able to watch the Daily Show and movies on Film 4.  But to each his own.

If Channel 5 vanished tomorrow, I wouldn't even notice, let alone miss it. We have a Freeview box, but I doubt if it gets switched on once a month. In fact when the Split-NIT thing happened to the Mendip transmitter we didn't even realise for 6 weeks that our box was obsolete.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, we had three stations, none of which started before 9 a.m. and all of which generally closed down around midnight or soon after, unless something special was going on.  And they didn't even broadcast programs full time between those hours, typically having breaks during the mid afternoon.

There are still areas where reception of the analog transmissions of "Five" is very poor unless you want to go the trouble of erecting a high-gain aerial, because it was squeezed into the band-plan in the 1990's and had to operate on greatly reduced power compared to the other four networks from many sites.

Remember that the shut down of analog terrestrial broadcasts has already started, and will be progressing region by region over the next couple of years.  The last analog TV transmitters are due to be closed down in 2012.

I have to admit that one reason why we don't worry about the TV channels is because of having broadband and a DVD player that plays Mpegs and has a socket for a pen drive.

Question - Do any of you have US ESPN? We're moving in 4-6 months and I swore to DH that I would make sure we had US ESPN so he could watch american football, baseball, etc. I understand it's more costly but am willing to pay for it to keep DH happy.

Please let me know if you have it and if it's worth it. Thanks!

We only had 4 channels for 5 years, until last September we moved to a flat that didn't have a regular aerial, just a Sky dish. We decided to get the Sky freesat so we could get any television at all, and now have a good 100+ channels of which we regularly watch about 10... most of those being the multiples ITVs, BBCsc Channel 4s and Channel 5s!

We haven't had a TV since I've been in the UK (3 years including visits).  Like chary mentioned, we watch stuff on BBC-iPlayer and channel 4 online.  Also, hubby downloads stuff from who-knows-where.

We are completely up to date with Dexter and True Blood.

There has been talk of allowing viewers to subscribe to channels of their choice. I can't see it happening but it sounds good.
