Agreed!   ;)  Have you ever tried biting into a whole clove - seriously wouldn't recommend it.   :-X

No, I have not :P  But mostly I asked, because I didn't see any ground cloves in the shop.  I guess I could do it myself, "Gasp" :o

Sod's Law: if you stop looking for it: you'll find it.   ;)  Stop trying so hard.  Like you said there's always manual labour, but you could trick the kiddo into doing it by putting it in a plastic baggie and getting the rolling pin out - turn it into a game.   [smiley=angel.gif]

LOL!  I'm not looking hard at all, in fact, I'm hardly looking :P  I looked in Waitrose, so really I should look at the big Sainsbury's next.  I do have a giant pestle and mortar I never use, tucked away somewhere.

Have you looked for "mixed spice" here?  You can get it at Tesco and it's about the same thing as pumpkin pie spice.  You can obviously make your own, but if it's the convenience of the pre-mixed spices you want, go for a bottle of mixed spice.  You'll sometimes have to look in the bigger stores for it--it isn't always in the corner shops.

Also, chewing on a whole clove kind of makes your mouth go a little numb.  Hence Clove Oil being good for toothache, etc.

I'd definitely keep looking (or not looking, but with purpose. :p) for Ground Cloves.  They're quite hard, and while I'm certain you could grind them in a mortar & pestle (and they'd probably taste & smell fabulous), I imagine it'd be a hell of a job!

You could use a spice grinder, or buy a cheap coffee grinder to use for spices.

Its quite strong and bitter.  For some reason I was on a clove obsession and decided to try chewing one.   :P  Have you ever tried clove cigarettes (they're sweeter because of the sacharin on the butts) or clove gum?

I saw some mixed Spice and it had one or two things that were not the same and seemed more savory appropriate.  I wish I could remember which spices they were though!

I've only looked at one shop though, I will be looking again, probably tomorrow.  Thanks all!

Mmmm... clove cigarettes. Been a long time. I'm not surprised they were strong, though. Whenever I use cloves it's only a very small amount. It goes a long way.

All this talk about cloves has inspired me to make orange pomanders!  Yay!

If you can't find ground cloves at your local supermarket, try one of the asian (Indian) markets. They usually have bags of it for much more reasonable prices anyway.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
