Steak?

Okay, I've been here a while and not thought about it.  But I've never seen flank steak or tri tip here?  Do they go under a different name?  Do I have to go to a butcher's to get them?  Someone point me in the right direction, please!
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Flank Steak is everywhere, it may go under the name Skirt Steak (except it is flank) Costco sell it and so does Morrisons, and many butchers. I have not seen it as anyplace like Sainsburys, Asda or Waitrose.

I have never heard of tri tip, so sorry can't help you!

We love flank steak in my house, marinated for ages and cooked slowly on the BBQ. My favorite...I might have to get some for the weekend! I miss true American style skirt steak though!

There are a number of websites, both in the US and UK, that show the basic cuts of beef (and other meats as well).  I've found that comparing the cut diagrams has been helpful in figuring out equivalents.  That way, even if you do have to ask a butcher for something special, you'll know how to describe what you're wanting.

I've found flank steak at a could local butcher's (one told me that he would order a box for me but it's not a very popular cut here in London)  I also haven't seen it in Waitrose.  I make some mean fajitas with Flank.

I'd kill for a tri-tip also, but they told me that they've never heard of it.  Isn't it part of the sirloin and/or topside here?

For those of your looking for a cheaper cut of meat to make jerky with, they said that the S. African's also enjoy a good jerky and use Topside or Silverside. 

Right now i'm just trying to find a dang turkey that doesn't cost the earth...most stores don't start getting stocked until it gets closer to Christmas.

Apparently tri-tip is a name/cut that's really only known on the west coast (as I found out the first time I tried to buy one here in Wisconsin).  I did a quick Wiki search, and apparently it's the same basic cut as a triangle steak in the UK:

Last year for Thanksgiving DW ordered a turkey from the butcher thinking that the supermarkets wouldn't have them, and it was very expensive, then about a week or 2 before Thanksgiving we saw them in the freezer in the supermarket, in fact I think I saw some the other week.
If you want fresh for Thanksgiving though you will have to order.

Yes!!!  We get something similar to this http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/index.jsp only from the butcher in Sainsbury's  pretty much weekly.  It's fabulous!!! :D

I found tri tips at whole foods last week and they were half off at 7 pounds each.  The name on the label was "dry aged sirloin filets".  They aren't marinated like the Morton's ones at Costco, but were still so yummy.
