The funny thing is, you will likely get to a point where it's not trying and it just comes naturally.  I had a lady ring me this morning from the UK (Jersey, actually) and when she told me they'd credited my account with the 260 quid I had stolen out of it, I said, 'thanks, that's brilliant.'  It just happens sometimes!

That's fine if it comes natural to you. I say a lot of things now that I never used to. I still use all the same words like awesome as well because it feels natural for me. For someone to suggest I say Brilliant instead of something else is just rude. Regardless if he though he was being helpful or joking to me is still wrong.

Very true, Geeta... let me rephrase:  I refuse to make an effort to say brilliant just to fit in.

Exactly.  And by the same token, I'd refuse to stop saying 'awesome' just to fit in.  :)

I use the word awesome a lot. (erp, now that I think about it, maybe too much!) I think the only reply to a comment like the one you got would have to be to slowly shake your head and just say:

"Dude, so not cool."

and walk away.

Honestly, though, he sounds like a few of the (American) parents of my middle school students, the phrase "I tell my children to wipe it from their vocabulary" indicates that the problem is HIS not YOURS.

I hate it when I realize I have missed opportunities like this one!!!  That would have been so funny - I am laughing to myself (and looking like an idiot) just thinking about it!  :)

Brillant topic,  :P ...my BF and I always have a laugh about me saying AWESOME all the time. It's just habit and hard to break. Everyone I know in the US says it frequently. Along with "Seriously"???

Just what makes us unique. Embrace it.

Dunno... a person who disapproves of the word 'awesome' would probably really hate 'dude'!

Rude. You're not one of his children and he can't tell you what to say.  I would use it more in fact, and make up words to go with it.

as example:

"Can you have those papers on my desk by this evening? Awesomesauce."

"You did? That's abso-awesome-lutely freakin' rad , DOOD!"

OMG Navie, you've got me practically spitting my lunch out onto the screen! Hilarious!!!!!!!!! I wanna start saying "awesomesauce" now!! ;D

I use this "awesomeness".

Let me use it in a sentence:

"What you do not realise is that you will never be able to fully replicate my awesomeness"
"One does not have to be rough to be strong; one can be gentle and persistent and still achieve results"

I also like the "Dude.. so not cool" response! That would have been priceless! heh

I definitely vote condescending and rude, too, btw. That was uncalled for. Curious- how old (approx) is this guy?? Like if he's grandpa age, he might just think he's "helping out the young kid"...

I think he wasn't trying to be mean, but it was a patronising comment. Not nice really.

I think just laughing and walking away might convey how you feel about it just as well.

Or, say, "Thanks, man. I totally didn't realise how often I say awesome." And then just start using "tooooootally" all the time to annoy him in a whole new way!  >:D

I use awesome-blossom [smiley=daisy.gif] and dude, though many of my male friends told me that they didn't like the word 'dude.' I still used it anyway. I agree, he was a bit rude and condescending. I doubt he was malicious about it, but he did make an ass of himself. Tomorrow, my goal for the day is to use both 'awesome' and 'dude' at least twice each :P
