Hola,

Been living in Coventry for the last 5 years and studied at the much beloved former Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in the late 80s. More or less from NY and NYC, but many interim destinations. I've filed for naturalization, but am looking forward to keeping touch with compatriots.

Welcome aboard!  I've been here five years too (6 in November).  I discovered UKY a little over a year ago and found it to be a wonderful community, and a great resource for US expats and soon-to-be expats.

Hope you enjoy your time with us.  :)

Welcome to the forum -- what's the weather like up there around Coventry and Birmingham? My wife and I are still in the US, looking to move to Britain by the end of the year... I'm just curious about that area because I've never been there but it's where my family lived about 80 years ago.

Well, believe or not, even though England is sort of the land of perpetual November (July???), there's a lot of geographic differences. The Midlands tends to be slightly colder than London, but not as rainy as Yorkshire. But even here there's a lot of variation. There's been a number of times I turn on BBC 1 news to hear about flooding in Warwickshire (just 12 kilometers away) and I look out the window and it's not even raining. But if you want to clue in, check the BBC Cov weather site.http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?id=1564. This can also be changed to Fahrenheit and/or your own location. Just another reason why the BBC is great!

Thanks Garry, I just found out about this site, and the vibe feels wonderful. V. excited to be here.

I had a feeling you'd decide to dip your toes in here!  Glad to see you.  Very different feelings over here, truly... ;D

Seems Coventry has a permanant black cloud over it these days! I dont mind it much as I moved here from near the coast of NC where its boiling hot. Dont care for the heat and sun so England is def. the place for me!

I don't mind it so much because I'm originally from Upstate NY, which also has a long stretch of slate gray sky months (probably what Seattle is also like). I'm a life-long refugee from the Snowbelt, so every winter morning here that comes without 6 more inches of snow is ok, by me. But I don miss the glorious seasonal changes, particularly Fall (or as they say here Autumn) nights and the "Indian" summers.

Hey, do you know Tin Angel? It's a nice, cool little cafe on a corner ten meters down on Spon Street. Very laid back atmosphere for a small bit or coffee: comfy Starbucks type sofas. Nice to cool your heels after some retail therapy.

No, I dont know of "Tin Angel" but its a great name. I heard they are going to open a Starbucks in town near the fountain and across from Boots. That would be nice. In London they have Starbucks on nearly every corner it seems. Havent seen one in Cov.

Where would that be - next to M & S? Also, in the new bookstore, Ottaker's, where Dixons used to be, there's a Costa on the second floor. Because there's a cut away plate glass window, it's a nice place to look onto the fountain.
