They drink tea, and I drink...
« on: December 08, 2009, 01:06:54 AM »
My husband is a tea-aholic, like a cup an hour, so when the kettle is boiled I find myself wanting a warm drink but I just can't handle that much tea in a day. So stocked up on hot chocolate, chai, chai latte mix, and green tea. Anyone else have a warm drink bug while living with someone who spends most their time at the kettle. Any suggestions on toasty warm products?

Tea... If you can't beat them...

Seriously, all the other drinks you mentioned have a lot of calories that I can't justify wasting on liquid.  I couldn't come up with anything else.  If you don't like black tea have you tried green tea?

Good Luck!

I couldn't keep up with all of the tea either.  I used to drink black tea without a problem, but within the past month or two it's tasted too bitter for me.  I started adding loads more milk to it, then moved onto drinking green tea but even that tasted bitter, and then I discovered rooibos / redbush and I love it.  It's so smooth tasting and it can be flavored with sugar or milk the same way you would flavor black tea.  I drink rooibos most of the time and usually also have a cup or two of earl grey each day, because that also doesn't taste bitter.

Most tea (green, white, and black) is all made from one tea plant, just it's processed different amounts.  But there are also infusions (such as fruit teas and herbal teas) which don't have anything to do with that plant, so you could also try those.  And seasoned teas are sometimes easier to drink, as well.  When a friend from America was visiting she had a spur of the moment idea to add cinnamon to the round of teas she was making; we thought it tasted nice but DH was a bit mortified.  ::)

I pretty much just drink tea when it comes to hot drinks, but some of the squashes can be really nice made up with hot water instead of cold.

Good point about fruit drinks!   At home, I sometimes like instant hot apple cider (which is available sugar-free).  When I'm visiting bf, he makes me hot apple & blackcurrant squash.  I balked at first, but it's actually really nice.  And both drinks are even nicer with a splash of booze in. :)

I'd also second the recommendation of herbal infusions and herbal/tea blends.  I'm very fond of peppermint, especially when I've got a cold.

I love Redbush. Redbush is also decaf, which is helpful late at night :D

Also, try Horlick's Malt powder. A hot Malted beverage is yummy, and they make chocolate flavoured too.

I've also heard (but haven't' tried it) that hot Ribena is good.

Of course there are a bazillion herbal teas (have you been past the Celestial Seasonings section lately in any big health food store--it's a wall of teas!), but peppermint tea is one I fall back on when I've already had loads of black tea, red bush tea, and coffee that day.  Mint tea is great for digestion, too and of course has no caffeine.

When I'm sick of coffee, I am too a tea drinker.  For plain tea, PG tips it is, but for herbals, Tea pigs flavours are my favourite, but very expensive (£5 a box!)  and I get made fun of for my posh tea bags from my co-workers.   ;)

I mostly just drink black tea, as well. I'm a Tetley girl.  ;) I didn't drink as much of it at first, as I wasn't used to drinking more than one hot drink in a day, but now I have a few cups of tea a day, and find I actually prefer it to coffee now (it doesn't upset my stomach the way coffee does). I brought back some spiced cider packets with me from the states and have one of those or a cup of Cadbury highlights hot chocolate if I feel like having something different. I do have some peppermint and fennel tea which DH thinks is nasty, but which I actually enjoy from time to time, especially if I have an upset tummy.

I drink a few cups of milky black tea a week.  I went off black tea because I have a problem with tannins.  Things like red wine bother me as well.  The poster who mentioned the bitterness might be tannin sensitive or they might be steeping it too long.  Right now we are drinking Typhoo for black tea.  Usually we drink Twinings, but we're trying different brands.  London Tea company makes good tea.

I go on various tea/hot drink kicks.  I absolutely love Heath & Heather herb teas.  They make a morning tea which is incredible.  I like redbush as well.  Some of the Twinings herb teas are ok.  Pukka teas are very good, but I like strong herb teas.  I go through severe Yogi Choco tea addictions that seem to come in cycles.

But mainly I drink coffee and water. I gave up coffee for a while, but I was falling asleep whenever I sat still for long enough.  Once I totally "pay off" my sleep debt, I might try to cut down or totally eliminate my coffee habit.

The poster who mentioned the bitterness might be tannin sensitive or they might be steeping it too long.

I've just researched this a bit and it really sounds like a possibility, especially since I had a problem with both the bitter taste and texture (not feeling smooth) of regular tea.  Thanks so much for mentioning this.  It's a much better excuse for not drinking black tea regularly than saying, "a few months ago it started tasting too bitter for me."  :P  And now I can try teas lower in tannin and be more conscious of how long I steep it.

DH's parents drink PG Tips but we moved on to Twinings Everyday because of the milder taste and I usually just drink it out of politeness when visiting relatives.  Luckily at work everyone drinks vastly different teas - one woman only drinks fruit tea, another mostly coffee but occasionally pukka tea, MIL mostly black tea but once or twice a day Fennel or Peppermint, and DH is trying all sorts of herbal throat teas because of a persistent cough.  His favorites are Pukka teas and Yogi teas.  Ooh, and chamomile is always a nice herbal tea to have occasionally too, especially if you have any cramps or stomach pain.

I'm really not mentioning anything new but what tha heck!

In our cupboard we have coffee, tea, chi tea, Horlicks, and Ovaltine!

Coffee in the morning for me and during the day a cup or 2 of tea. Some nights I'll have a Horlicks, chi, or Ovaltine just to switch it up a bit a little while before bed.

We also always have Berocca (or as my DH calls it Barack Obama). Yeah I know, he thinks he is so clever. I've never tried it hot but this thread has me thinking I might give it a go.

Decaf tea is what I'd do.  I have completely given up caffeine and amazingly I am able to manage with just a cup of decaf tea a day (maybe two if I'm cold in the evenings).  I also don't like the added calories of many of the other drinks.  My other standby is warm skim milk to keep calories down.

I've never been a big fan of tea or coffee so when I really want a hot drink I go for a herbal tea or a hot chocolate. My favoruite herbal tea has always been rosehip. Peppermint is nice too - very refreshing.  The only tea I've found that doesn't have that nasty tannin taste is Kenyan.
